HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss sophomore Walker Kesterson shot a one-under 71 on the final day of the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, to finish tied for 20th in the 36-hole event.
Being played at the par 72, 7,435-yard TPC San Antonio Oaks Course, the Golden Eagles bettered their stroke total as a team by seven strokes from the first day to finish at 306 for a 619 two-day total to place 13th in the 15-team event.
"As the board will show, we did not have our best stuff this week," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "There are a lot of errors that will need to be cleaned up before we begin the Sam Hall (next week). Soon as we get back to practice this week, we will address our areas to improve and get back on the horse to compete again."
Kesterson posted one birdie and one eagle along with 14 pars to shoot his best round his best rounds since firing a 71 in the opening round of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational last season. The junior from Hartsburg, Mo., improved his first place 22 spots in the final standings as he posted a 36-hole total of 148. It was Kesterson's seventh Top 25 finish in his Golden Eagle career.
"Walker had a solid week and has been a steady performer throughout the past few weeks of training camp," said Brescher. "Leading into our training, it was obvious that his game is in a good spot from his work this summer. It comes as no surprise that his ball striking was exceptional. Given his track record, we expect him to perform even better for future events."
Both senior Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) and sophomore Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) finished with rounds of 76 to post totals of 153 and 155 to place tied for 48th and 59th, respectively. Sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) collected an 83 for a 166 total and senior Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) fired an 86 for a 166 total as well. Both players tied for 82nd place.
A four-hour rain delay on Monday forced the tournament organizers to trim the length of the tournament from 54 to 36 holes.
Host UTSA won the event with a two-under, two-day total of 578, followed by Arkansas State (580), Little Rock and Sam Houston State (589), ULM (591), South Alabama (597), Texas State and Rice (599), North Texas (600), Louisiana-Lafayette (603), UT Arlington (606), McNeese State (614), Southern Miss (619), Lipscomb (620) and UTEP (625).
The Golden Eagles return to action next week when they play host to the 16th annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18.
