HAMMOND, La. – The Lady Eagles came away with the win on Thursday night against Southeastern Louisiana, 59-52, for their first road win of the season.
Southern Miss (8-4) came out with the win in the fourth quarter against the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana. The Lady Eagles were down by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter, 43-33, but it was the leadership of Camille Anderson that brought USM out of the deficit. The redshirt junior started the momentum off with a good three, followed by a jumper and a free throw. Megan Brown hit the next three, her second of the game, and Anderson matched it with her second of the quarter. Anderson finished the game with 14 points, 11 of those coming in that fourth quarter alone. Southern Miss saw Southeastern Louisiana's offense go cold, only scoring nine points in that final quarter, where USM had 27.
The game started off slow; the defense was working hard, and offense was a fight for both teams. A low scoring game overall, the Lady Eagles went into the half with a total of 16 points, leading by two. Southern Miss had 26 rebounds going into the third quarter, 19 of them defensive.
Quotables
Megan Brown
"I am so excited and I hope I can make sense because of how excited I am. I'm so proud of the team that we are, and last year's team wasn't this. We couldn't find a way to overcome adversity. I'm proud. It shows the amount of work we've put in."
"It was truly a team effort. Camille with great leadership the entire game, Daishai coming in and making some big plays; everyone contributed. Amber comes in when we needed a momentum shift and she hit a post bucket which we needed. Kelsey comes in and does what she does."
"I'm so excited. It's a well-deserved break for the coaches and us, but I'm proud that we're progressing. That's what we're about – not just the result; progressing.
Joye Lee-McNelis
"I'm really proud. Megan Brown played really hard for the entire game, as did Alarie Mayze, In the fourth quarter – Kelsey Jones gave us something. She steps up in the fourth quarter, Camille Anderson hits big shots for us, Daishai Almond plays well for us in the fourth quarter as well, and you throw those three in with Alarie and Megan – just an effort. What we proved tonight was that we could be down 11 and we can come back and win. Our players have to see that. We didn't do that at all last year, we didn't do it at all."
"Kelsey has to decide that she wants to be the anchor inside. We have to continue to push as a staff, but I'm really proud of her progress. Camille Anderson's leadership was outstanding tonight on the floor. She was one of the major reasons why Kelsey could do what she did. Camille hit huge shots for us tonight. She will continue to make progress, she wants to get better. Camille is used to playing a much different pace and she's still getting used to that."
Tidbits
The Lady Eagles will now return to their home court for three games, starting with the final non-conference matchup of the season with Houston on Dec. 30. Conference play will begin with Rice on Jan. 3.
