WBB Falls to Houston in Final Game of 2018

The Lady Eagles start the new year in conference play, facing Rice on Jan. 3.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles fell to Houston, 61-44, on Sunday night in the final game of 2018 in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss (8-5) had a hard-fought game against Houston (6-7), where the score was tied seven times throughout the matchup. Shonte Hailes was back in the starting lineup after returning from an injury. It was a game where many of the points came in the paint; 30 of the Cougars and 24 of the Lady Eagles'. Balls from beyond the arc wouldn't fall for either team, Houston only made seven and USM only made four.
Alarie Mayze made waves for Southern Miss, making her first three-pointer of the season and having a team-high for points with nine and a team-high steals with two. This is Mayze's first time leading the team in points in her career. She was tied for assists with three along with teammates Hailes and Allie Kennedy. Kennedy's three are a season-high. Kelsey Jones and Respect Leaphart both put in work on the boards, each putting up six rebounds. All six of Jones' were defensive.
Houston made four three-pointers in the third quarter, helping them push ahead of the Lady Eagles by scoring 19 points. It was the highest-scoring quarter for Southern Miss as the Lady Eagles posted 14 points of their own. The third ended with the score in Houston's favor once again, at 42-33. USM held on in the fourth quarter, but the lead continued to grow for the Cougars. A good jumper by Megan Brown with a little over six minutes to go cut the lead to eight, and she cut it again to eight with a layup with just under six left on the clock. Houston had seven points off the bench in the final quarter, and Southern Miss had five second-chance points. The Lady Eagles finished the game with eight second-chance points and 23 off of turnovers.
