Southern Miss improves to 7-4 with a win over Blue Mountain College.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Lady Eagles came out with a big win over Blue Mountain College, 84-38 on Tuesday night in Reed Green Coliseum.
Although an exhibition for the Lady Toppers, it was a learning experience for the Lady Eagles. Southern Miss (7-4) had a brand new starting lineup against the Lady Toppers, with Daishai Almond, Kennedy Gavin, Alarie Mayze, Respect Leaphart, and Megan Brown. This was Almond's first game as a starter, the second as the team's point guard; it was also Kennedy Gavin's first game as a starter. Firsts continued to roll after the starting lineup was announced. Destiny Smith nailed a 3-pointer, Kelsey Jones had her first 20-point game, and Almond had eight assists, the most by a Lady Eagle this season.
The game didn't start out hot for the Lady Eagles, with four turnovers and going down by six in the first three minutes. Southern Miss started to turn the game around and matched the Lady Toppers' lead within the next two minutes. Alarie Mayze started the change with a good jumper, but it was Kelsey Jones, Megan Brown and Allie Kennedy who really got the momentum going. Brown and Kennedy had three-pointers back to back, both coming after Jones had three good shots in the paint. Finishing the first quarter with 11 points off the bench and 12 in the paint, the Lady Eagles were poised to make their charge ahead. Southern Miss ended the game with 42 bench points, 24 second chance points, 48 in the paint, and 35 off of turnovers. The Lady Eagles beat out BMC in almost every facet of the game, and never trailed after those first few minutes of the first quarter. Kelsey Jones finished with her second double-double of the season; 21 points and 13 rebounds. Alarie Mayze made her mark with 14 points and six steals, and Daishai Almond continued to shine with eight assists on the night.
