Lady Eagles Defeat Grambling State 68-47

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles defeated the Tigers of Grambling State in an afternoon game in Reed Green Coliseum, 68-47.Â

Southern Miss (2-0) jumped out with an early lead on Grambling State (1-2) and had a strong defensive performance against the Tigers in their win. The majority of the team's rebounds came from the defensive side and the Lady Eagles held Grambling State to several scoring droughts of a minute or more.Â

The Lady Eagles started with an early lead and maintained that lead for the rest of the game, never trailing. Shonte Hailes led the team in scoring with 18 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Hailes led the team in points, rebounds and assists. Megan Brown had 15 points on the night and owns the lone USM 3-pointer of the game. Overall, four Lady Eagles scored in double-figures, with Alarie Mayze and Kelsey Jones being alongside Hailes and Brown.

Southern Miss overcame Grambling State in almost every facet of the game. The Lady Eagles outscored, out-rebounded, out-assisted, and out-stole the Tigers. The two teams tied in blocks with two.Â

The relentless defense played by Southern Miss was shown as they held Shakyla Hill, Grambling State's top scorer, to just eight points for the night. She was 2-for-8 from the field. In the last two games for Grambling State, as she had 18 points against Auburn and 19 against McNeese State.

The Tigers trailed after one period with Southern Miss leading 15-9 and were outscored in the second quarter, 13-11. Hailes' bucket with 7:04 left in the first quarter could be said to be the turning point for the Golden Eagles, as their momentum and drive saw an uptick. Going into the half the Lady Eagles held a 28-20 lead. The third quarter saw only three turnovers by Southern Miss and the team took a 50-41 advantage in the final quarter of the game. The Lady Eagles responded to a pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter by going on a 9-0 run. Freshman Daishai Almond closed out the game with a jumper with only 2 seconds remaining, creating the largest lead for Southern Miss with 21 points.Â
