
Southern Miss Takes Down UTSA 1-0 in Thursday Afternoon Contest

The Golden Eagles posted their eighth shutout of the season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss soccer team (10-3-0, 4-2-0 C-USA) defeated the UTSA Roadrunners (5-7-1, 1-4-1 C-USA) by a final score of 1-0 on Thursday afternoon, earning their eighth shutout of the season.
Defense was the name of the game for the majority of the match as both teams battled in the trenches until the very end.
The difference in the game came at the 29:10 mark in the first half when junior midfielder Monica Maldonado found the back of the net on a beautiful assist from sophomore midfielder Jenny Caracheo to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Southern Miss defense who has become a force to be reckoned with over the course of the season, stepped up once again when they were needed most. The Golden Eagles backline notched their second shutout in back-to-back matches en route to recording their eighth of the season in 13 games played.
The outstanding goalkeeping of sophomore Kendell Mindnich also played a major role in the Golden Eagles victory. Mindnich finished the game with a total of four saves, two of which came with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match. In addition, the sophomore turned in her fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Golden Eagles will now prepare for their final home match of the 2018 season which will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 12:00 p.m. (CT) against UTEP (6-8-1, 1-5-0 C-USA) at the Southern Miss Track & Field and Soccer Complex.
Sunday's match will feature Senior Day and Blake Nettles Day. Six Golden Eagles will take the home pitch for the final time as they seek their fifth conference win of the season.
The Southern Miss senior class composed of midfielder Aisa Ribbens, defender Ashton Stennis, forward Elishah Santiago, midfielder Hannah Abrams, defender Ola Akinniyi, and midfielder Stephanie Garcia have been an instrumental part in the Golden Eagles success this season, as they have helped the program turn the corner and put their squad in prime position to earn a bid to the C-USA tournament.
