Southern Miss Soccer Set to Face UAB in C-USA Tournament Quarterfinal Match on Wednesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss soccer team (11-5-1, 5-4-1 C-USA) will face UAB in the second quarterfinal match of the 2018 Air Force Reserve Women's Soccer Championship in Norfolk, Va. on Wednesday, October 31. The Golden Eagles and the Blazers will kick-off at 2:00 p.m. (ET).

The last time out
Southern Miss wrapped up their regular season against Louisiana Tech on Friday night in Ruston, La. The Golden Eagles fell to Lady Techsters by a final score of 2-0.

Back-to-back goals by freshman forward Connor Barker at the 60:58 and 65:35 marks in the match propelled Louisiana Tech to victory.

Despite the loss, Southern Miss finished the match with a 14-9 shots advantage over Louisiana Tech and a 4-3 corner kicks advantage.

The regular season
Southern Miss finished the regular season with one of the best records in school history.

The Golden Eagles recorded the first 11-win season in program history since 1997, the year that the program first began.

Southern Miss also notched five conference wins, the most conference wins recorded by any Southern Miss team since 2000.

The Southern Miss backline held their ground all season long and helped their squad break the previous single-season shutout record of seven shutouts set by the 2003 squad when they defeated UTSA on October 11, earning their eighth shutout of the season.

UAB leads the all-time series 13-5-1. The Golden Eagles are 2-6-1 when facing UAB in Hattiesburg and 3-7-0 in contests played in Birmingham.

The last meeting on the pitch
Southern Miss and UAB last faced each other on the pitch on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at BBVA Field in Birmingham, Ala.

UAB edged out the Golden Eagles 2-0 in the contest. Goals by midfielder Regan Kommor and forward Caroline Kehrer early in the first and second halves of the match helped lead the Blazers to victory.

The opponent
Under the direction of second year head coach Erica Demers, UAB finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-7-1 and a record of 6-4-0 in C-USA play.

In her first season with the program in 2017, Demers led UAB to the C-USA Tournament. The Blazers entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and fell to FAU (No. 6 seed) 1-0 in overtime of the quarterfinals.

Demers 2018 squad finds themselves in familiar territory as they will enter the quarterfinals on Wednesday as the No. 3 seed in the 2018 Air Force Reserve Women's Soccer Championship.

What's on the line
Southern Miss will be chasing history when they take the pitch against UAB on Wednesday, as they continue to seek a program-best, 12-win season.

The Golden Eagles' record-setting defense will also be looking to extend their single-season shutout record to 10 games.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich will still be chasing the individual single-season shutout record of six shutouts, posted by Anna Snyder in 2003.

Mindnich currently ranks second all-time in the Southern Miss record books with five shutouts this season.
