Golden Eagles Dump Southeastern LouisianaÂ
Hattiesburg, Miss. - On a night in which senior setter Sarah Bell was honored for becoming the all-time leader in career assists at Southern Miss, it was another setter that emerged with a career night. Lainey Aenchbacher, a sophomore, contributed with a career-high 17 helpers in a four-set (25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18) win over Southeastern Louisiana.Â
Aenchbacher and the Golden Eagles jumped out fast en route to building a 10-4 lead early in the first frame. The Lions managed to trim the deficit to five, but a Southern Miss run slashed the Lions' comeback attempt. Southern Miss built another lead in the second set and never relinquished it en route to another set win.Â
Just like Sunday, the Golden Eagles were poised to escape in three sets, but Southeastern Louisiana had other ideas. With key reserves hitting the floor for Southern Miss, the Lions utilized key runs to capitalize. Dani Ajayi was one of those key reserves and finished her night with four kills. However, Ajayi's strong arm wasn't enough as Southeastern Louisiana managed to force a fourth set.Â
Coach Stephanie Radecki responded by putting her big hitters into the game and it paid off as the Golden Eagles built a 7-4 lead early in the final set. The Golden Eagles held steady for the remainder of the set and a Kylie Grandy kill and Lions attack error sealed the Golden Eagles' 12th victory.Â
Bell capped off her night with 30 assists, two kills, two service aces and seven digs. Grandy walked off the floor with 22 kills, which was 12 more than any other Golden Eagle. The next closest was Alexis Coombs at 10. In total, eight different Golden Eagles recorded a kill. Junior Catherine Repsher paced the Golden Eagles at the net with three blocks. Sophomore Madison Lawler snagged a team-high 14 digs.Â
