HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagles walked out of Reed Green Coliseum with a four-set win (25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) against Marshall. The win helped build Southern Miss' playoff position as they go down the stretch of C-USA play with four conference games remaining.Â
If the first set was any indicator to how the match would go, it shaped it up to be a good one. Southern Miss and Marshall traded points for a majority of the first set, but the Golden Eagles utilized a 7-1 run to build a comfortable lead. Up seven, they never looked back en route to a win in the opening frame. Alexis Coombs backed the Golden Eagles with seven kills on nine attempts in the set.Â
The Herd answered back in the second set by building a four-point lead. The Golden Eagles were able to cut the deficit to 23-19, but Marshall held them off to tie the sets at one. Southern Miss was able to respond in the third set and pulled away to force The Herd into a must-win fourth set.Â
In the fourth set, the two squads battled until Southern Miss exploded for an 8-2 run to pull ahead by seven. The Herd were never able to recover and fell in the final set via a 25-17 score. Kylie Grandy paced the Golden Eagles with 22 kills and 12 digs in win number 13 for them. Sarah Bell added 54 helpers in a setters duel against Gabrielle Coulter of Marshall.Â
Coombs ended her night with 14 kills on a game-high .737 hitting percentage. Kellie Garraway had a team-high 13 digs. Ashley Berry exploded for six blocks to go along with her six kills.Â
Thoughts from Stephanie RadeckiÂ
"Alexis Coombs had a great night and so did Catherine Repsher. Our middles are strong and they displayed that tonight.
After losing the second set I felt like we held our composure and responded. Very proud of a strong, home conference win."
Â
The win was No. 350 in Radecki's coaching career.Â
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host UAB at 6 p.m.
