Southern Miss Soccer Ready for Sunday Afternoon Battle at UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After matching a program best, 11 wins on Friday night, the Southern Miss soccer team (11-3-1, 5-2-1 C-USA) will now travel to Birmingham, Ala. for a 1:00 p.m. (CT) contest against the UAB Blazers (8-6-1, 5-3-0 C-USA) on Sunday, October 21. The match will be played at BBVA Compass Field on the campus of UAB.

The last time out
In their last match, Southern Miss defeated Middle Tennessee by a final score of 1-0.

The Golden Eagles surpassed multiple team and individual milestones in Murfreesboro on Friday night.

With their win against the Blue Raiders, the Golden Eagles notched their 11^th win of the season. Until last night, no Southern Miss team had recorded an 11-win season since 1997, the year that the program first began.

The Golden Eagles also earned their fifth conference win, marking the most conference wins by a Southern Miss team since the 2000 squad finished the season with six conference wins.

Southern Miss also posted their ninth shutout of the season, setting a new single-season high. Prior to the 2018 season, the most shutouts ever recorded by a Southern Miss team in a single season was seven, which occurred in 2003.

Additionally, two Golden Eagles achieved individual milestones in the contest.

Sophomore defender Caitlin Pierce recorded the first goal of her Southern Miss career. Pierce produced the lone goal of the game after netting a set piece at the 42:54 mark in the first half of the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich registered her fifth shutout of the season. Mindnich's five shutouts this season are the second most recorded by a Southern Miss goalkeeper in a single season.

Breaking down the all-time record
UAB currently leads the all-time series 12-5-1. The Golden Eagles hold a 2-6-1 record when facing the Blazers at home. In road contests against the Blazers, the Golden Eagles are 3-6-0.

The last meeting on the pitch
The last meeting between Southern Miss and UAB on the pitch took place on October 20, 2017 at BBVA Compass Field in Birmingham, Ala. UAB won the Friday night match 1-0. UAB forward Caroline Kehrer scored the only goal of the match in the second minute of play to lead the Blazers to victory.

The opponent
The Blazers are led by Ontario, Canada native Erica Demers who is in her second season as the head coach of the UAB women's soccer program. Demers was named the head coach at UAB on May 22, 2017.

Since Demers took over the program in 2017, she has taken the Blazers to new heights. In her first season, Demers helped the Blazers increase their win total by 11 games. She also helped them more than double the amount of goals scored from 18 in 2016 to 39 in 2017.

UAB is currently 21-10-4 under the direction of Demers. The last time that the Blazers took the pitch, they defeated the WKU Lady Toppers 2-1 in overtime on Friday, October 19.

What's on the line
The Golden Eagles will have a lot to play for in Birmingham on Sunday afternoon. Southern Miss will be seeking their 12^th win of the season which would be the most wins ever recorded in a single season by a Southern Miss team.

The Golden Eagles will also be seeking their sixth conference win, which would match the program record of six posted by the 2000 team.

The Southern Miss backline will look to continue to extend their single season shutout record as they play for their 10^th shutout of the season.

Southern Miss goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich will have the opportunity to tie the single season shutout record set by Anna Snyder in 2003.
