The Golden Eagles posted their first 11-win season since 1997
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (11-3-1, 5-2-1 C-USA) defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (9-5-1, 4-3-1 C-USA) by a final score of 1-0 on Friday night at Dean A. Hayes Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Â
Much like most of the Golden Eagles' contests this season, Friday night's match was a tough defensive battle between both teams.
Â
The first half of the match looked as if it would end with both teams headed to the locker room knotted at 0-0. Sophomore defender Caitlin Pierce changed that though with a set piece goal that came at the 42:54 mark of the match. The first half goal netted by Pierce was the first of her Southern Miss career.
Â
The Golden Eagles' defense showed up once again in one of the most critical matches of the season by recording their ninth shutout of the season. The nine shutouts recorded by the 2018 squad are a new season-high for the Southern Miss soccer program.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich proved to be clutch in the net as well as she registered four saves to keep the Blue Raiders off of the board, preserving the shutout for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Mindnich finished the evening by etching her name in the Southern Miss record books after logging her fifth shutout of the season. Mindnich has now recorded the second most shutouts of any Southern Miss goalkeeper in a single season.
Â
With two more guaranteed games remaining on the Golden Eagles schedule, Mindnich will have the opportunity to either tie or break the all-time record for single season shutouts. Anna Snyder's six shutouts recorded in 2003 currently rank first among all Southern Miss goalkeepers.
Â
Southern Miss' victory over Middle Tennessee on Friday night marked the 11th of the season for the Golden Eagles, a feat that had not been accomplished since the Southern Miss soccer program first began in 1997.
Â
Friday night's victory also marked the fifth conference win of the season for the Golden Eagles. The five conference wins are the most for a Southern Miss squad since 2000. The 2000 team finished the season with a total of six conference wins. Â
Â
Southern Miss will celebrate the historical marks that they achieved on Friday night but will soon be back to business as they prepare to face UAB (8-6-1, 4-2-0 C-USA) on Sunday, October 21 at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at BBVA Compass Field in Birmingham, Ala.
