Soccer Edged On Road by Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - The Southern Miss soccer team opened a Conference USA road series with a 1-0 loss to Old Dominion at the ODU Soccer Complex in Norfolk, Va.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles recorded six shots, including a pair of shots on goal. The Black and Gold were unable to break the plane of the goal. Ashley Johnson paced the team, notching three shots, including a shot on goal. Missy Wentz tallied a pair of shots and Brooke Hendrix put her only shot on goal.
Defensively, Brittany Taylor took the hard-luck loss. The sophomore allowed just one goal, while recording seven saves on the night. Taylor was helped out by a teammate as a team save was also credited. The Lady Monarchs were credited with 20 shots, including nine shots on goal.
Old Dominion was the first team to scratch the scoreboard, scoring a goal in the 42nd minute. The Lady Monarchs Jessie Klamut netted her fifth goal of the season to put the home team in front 1-0. Madison Hogan was credited with the assist.
The period ended with ODU in front 1-0. In the first half, the Golden Eagles tallied three shots, but were unable to put any on frame. Johnson led the team in the first stanza with two shots, while Wentz added an attempt. Conversely, Old Dominion was credited with 14 shots, including seven shots on goal in the first half.
The second half saw neither team score. The shots were much closer in the second stanza as ODU held a slight 6-to-3 edge. Each team had a pair of shots on goal as both Johnson and Hendrix put shots on frame in the half. Taylor was able to deflect both shots on goal by the Lady Monarchs in the second half, giving the Golden Eagles a chance to potentially tie the game.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles take on Charlotte in an afternoon game against the 49ers at noon.
