
Late Goal Costs Soccer Against Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C. The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 5-8-2 overall and 0-4-2 in Conference USA, while the 49ers improved to 7-5-1 overall and 4-2-0 in league play.
Southern Miss tallied 12 shots on day with six shots on goal and one goal.
Casey Adkins scored off of an assist from Kay Kay Hypolite. The goal was Adkins' four of the season, tying the senior with freshman Karen Torres for the team lead in goals and Torres and sophomore Breann Hedin with a team best eight points on the year. The assist was Hypolite's second helper of the season and the third of the sophomore's career.
Ashley Johnson and Brooke Hendrix paced the team with four shots apiece. Adkins added a pair of shots, while Somer Jones and Becky McMullan also recorded shots. Two of Johnson's shots were on goal, while Hendrix, Adkins, Jones and McMullan all posted shots on frame.
Brittany Taylor took the hard-luck loss for the Golden Eagles at goal. The sophomore goalkeeper surrendered a pair of goals, while recording seven saves. On the season, Taylor has a season-best 44 saves and a team-best 1.18 goals against average. The sophomore now has a 172 saves in her career, passing Anna Snyder (2001-04) for fourth in the Southern Miss record books.
Charlotte was the first team to score, netting a goal in the 28th minute. The 49ers' Rebecca Beatty took a long shot from 35 yards out to put the home team on the scoreboard, 1-0.
Southern Miss knotted the score in the 37th minute. Hypolite passed the ball forward from the left side of the field to Adkins who blasted the ball from 30 yards out, tying the game at 1-1.
The two teams went into intermission with the score locked at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 70th minute. Charlotte regained the lead with a goal by Alex Meyers. Amanda Jones and Martha Thomas moved the ball forward with bang-bang passes. Meyers finished the run with a low shot to the left post.
The Golden Eagles were unable to score the equalizer, dropping the one-goal decision on the road.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 as the Golden Eagles return to the Southern Miss Soccer Complex to host Louisiana Tech. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
