Friday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium did not prove to be any different as Southern Miss was shutout 3-0 by Mississippi State in the opening game of the 2011 NCAA Atlanta Regional.
The Golden Eagles (39-18) outhit the Bulldogs 8-7 but could not convert on the few scoring opportunities they had in the contest.
The lack of scoring also ruined another solid outing from senior All-American Todd McInnis, who threw his second-straight complete game for the Eagles. McInnis (8-3) struck out six and walked just two as all three runs were earned.
Despite threatening several times in the contest, the Golden Eagles extended its scoreless inning streak to 25. The team also was shutout for the third time in the last seven games.
Southern Miss had runners at first and second in the second inning, but the frame ended when Chase Fowler was picked off of first base. In the fifth, the Golden Eagles got a leadoff double from Fowler who then went to third on a one-out single by Kameron Brunty, but Tyler Koelling lined into a double play to end the chance.
The Golden Eagles also registered consecutive one-out singles by B.A. Vollmuth and Marc Bourgeois, but a flyout and a groundout by pinch hitter Adam Doleac ended the threat.
Vollmuth, Bourgeois and Mark Ellis each led the Golden Eagles with two hits each.
The Bulldogs took an early lead with a solo run in the first. With two outs and a runner at first base, Nick Vickerson doubled into left-centerfield and Ryan Collins scored from first on the play.
MSU (35-23) scored its final two runs in the sixth. After a leadoff walk by Vickerson, Jaron Shepherd singled through the left side. After a sacrifice by Cody Freeman, Brent Brownlee took advantage of a drawn infield and delivered a two-run single past a diving Isaac Rodriguez and into centerfield.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday at 2 p.m., CT, when they meet the loser of the No.1 Georgia Tech and No. 4 Austin Peay which was set to be played later in the day.
The game can be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by IMG College as well as being televised on CSS.
