The loss ended the Golden Eagles' season as they finished with a 39-19 record.
Southern Miss continued its scoreless inning streak to 32 innings in the contest, before plating a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. After a leadoff single by Justin Diliberto, Kameron Brunty doubled off the base of the wall in rightfield to put runners at second and third.
B.A. Vollmuth then drove in his team-best 49th RBI with a groundout to second and Ashley Graeter notched a sacrifice fly to leftfield.
The Yellow Jackets, though, had built an early lead and scored all the runs they needed in the second inning. On the first pitch of the frame from USM starter Josh Thomason, Daniel Palka homered down the rightfield line. It was Palka's 11th round-tripper of the campaign.
After a Jacket double and single, Sam Dove singled home a run up the middle to make the score 2-0. The Golden Eagles went to the pen and USM reliever Dillon Day was greeted with a three-run homer to left by Brandon Thomas, his third of the year.
GT (41-20) added another run in the third on a RBI single by Jacob Esch to make the score 6-0.
The Golden Eagles then went to USM closer, Collin Cargill, for the 103rd of his career. The senior from Hattiesburg limited the Jackets to three hits and a walk with three strikeouts over the final 5 1/3 innings to keep the game close.
Other USM seniors, Tyler Koelling and Adam Doleac, who both saw limited action in the regional both pinch hit in the ninth.
GT starter Jared Bradley (7-3) picked up the victory by allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Thomason (2-3) lasted just 1 2/3 for Southern Miss, allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss.
Even though the season ended with a pair of losses in the regional, the Golden Eagles captured a share of the Conference USA crown and reached their ninth straight NCAA regional and 12th overall.
