The Golden Eagles (37-13, 15-6) lost just its second series in league play and head to the final weekend of the regular season starting Thursday playing its closest competitor in the standings, Rice. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
UH (24-27, 11-10) jumped on Golden Eagle starter Jonathan Thompson in the opening inning. After hitting the first batter in the bottom of the first, Ryan Still and Caleb Ramsey both singled to load the bases. After a lineout and a strikeout, it looked liked Southern Miss was going to get out of the jam, but Joel Ansley hit one back up the middle to plate a couple of runs.
Codey Morehouse then hit a grounder to third that went through the legs of B.A. Vollmuth at third base to plate two more runs before Ty Stuckey added an RBI single to finish the opening scoring.
Thompson (6-1) threw to just 10 batters and recorded two outs as he surrendered five runs (two earned) on no walks and one strikeout with a pair of hit batters to suffer the loss.
Meanwhile, Wiley limited the Golden Eagles to eight hits as his only blemish was a home run to Adam Doleac in the sixth. It was the second round-tripper of the year for the senior from Hattiesburg. Wiley improved to 3-4 on the year as he walked four and struckout two in the Cougars' second complete game of the season.
Tyler Koelling and Ashley Graeter each led Southern Miss with two hits each.
The Golden Eagles also got a solid relief outing from junior Josh Thomason as he surrendered just one run over seven innings on eight hits with a strikeout.
