With the victory, both teams have captured 6-5 victories over the first two games of the series. The deciding game of the set will take place at 1 p.m., Sunday and can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College as well as Southern Miss All-Access.
The Golden Eagles (37-12, 15-5) saw a five-game winning streak snapped and still lead Rice by two game in the league standings with four to play as the Owls lost to Memphis earlier in the day 5-3 in 10 innings.
Tyler Koelling and Ashley Graeter led Southern Miss with a pair of hits each as the Golden Eagles tallied eight in the contest.
With the score tied at 5-5, Landon Appling led off the sixth with a single to centerfield. After a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to move Appling to third, he then scored on a Caleb Ramsey which proved to be the difference in the contest.
Southern Miss fell behind early after giving up five runs on just two hits to go along with two walks and two hit batters by Golden Eagle starter Geoffrey Thomas in the second.
Koelling delivered a two-run double in the third, then got an RBI single from Isaac Rodriguez and a run-scoring double from Ashley Graeter in the fourth, before Kameron Brunty tied the score by driving in a run with a single in the sixth.
Dustin Fuerst, though, kept the Golden Eagles off balance over the final five innings as he allowed just one run on one hit with three walks to get the victory and improve to 1-0.
Reliever Dillon Day (1-2) threw 2 1/3 frames and gave up a run on four hits with a walk to suffer the loss.
Collin Cargill, who registered his 100th career appearance as a Golden Eagle, came in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to notch his 40th career double play groundout to get out of a jam in the eighth.
Southern Miss got a leadoff walk in the ninth to Marc Bourgeois but then registered three outs to end the contest.
