Thompson Throws Complete-Game Shutout to Beat ECU

The Golden Eagles (32-10 overall, 11-3 C-USA) won their sixth consecutive league game as they registered their fifth shutout of the season and first since a 1-0 decision over New Orleans on April 17. Southern Miss, which has won both games of the series and goes after its third sweep of league play, completes the series with a 10 a.m. CT, contest Sunday.
Senior Marc Bourgeois led the Golden Eagles with three hits, including a grand slam, as the team registered 12 hits in the contest. B.A. Vollmuth, who made his first start of the year at third base, added two hits.
Southern Miss scored all of its runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Kameron Brunty singled and Tyler Koelling doubled to put runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to B.A. Vollmuth, Bourgeois blasted a grand slam on ECU's starter Kevin Brandt's first pitch to right field to give the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.
Isaac Rodriguez then doubled and Adam Doleac then singled him in to complete the game's scoring.
USM's Thompson limited the Pirates (27-16, 8-9) to just one hit in five different innings and took advantage of a season-high four double plays turned by the defense as the squad now has a nation-leading 62 for the year.
The junior from Denham Springs, La., walked four and struck out three while pitching to four batters over the minimum to get the victory and improve to 6-0 on the campaign.
Brandt allowed all five runs on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout to suffer the loss.
Mike Ussery led ECU with two singles.
