BIRMINGHAM. Ala. - The Southern Miss soccer team continued their road swing with a 4-0 loss at Samford Friday night, falling to 1-2 on the young season. The Bulldogs used a goal late in the first half and three in the second half to take control of the match.
"Our hats are to off to Samford," head coach Scott Ebke said. "They made us pay for our mistakes and capitalized on their scoring chances tonight. We had some great looks on goal, but did not execute the final ball. We have to be disciplined in our defense and continue to grow from these early games to get ready for Conference USA play."
The Eagles tallied 10 shots in the game, though only four were on goal while Samford took 12 shots, four of which found the back of the net.
The Bulldog (1-2-1) scored the games first goal in the 44th minute, just a minute and 47 seconds before halftime, on Shanika Thomas' first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead at the half.
The second half was a different story as Samford added goals in the 56th, 73rd and 79th minutes to put the game away.
Samantha Polley, Chanel Elgin and Chelsea Cruthirds were the only Southern Miss players with multiple shots, all three recorded two shots each in the match.
Southern Miss continues the road trip on Sunday as they travel to Nashville to face Vanderbilt University.
