HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team was finally able to avoid the weather and play a complete game Sunday afternoon and came away with a 4-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State.
The Golden Eagles controlled the game from the opening whistle outshooting Valley 34-0 with 13 corner kicks on the afternoon.
It was a dominating effort all game by the black and gold and the shots finally lit the scoreboard in the second half as Southern Miss scored all four goals in the final 40 minutes.
"We played organized in the first half and just could not find the back of the net," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We created a lot of chances but could not finish them. Ironically we had fewer chances in the second half but converted them."
Jordan Gauthier got the golden goal in the 55th minute as she broke away on a long pass from Liz Hamlin and beat the Valley keeper inside the box.
Keilah Hopkins added her second goal of the season in the 68th minute from inside the box on a ball played in by Liz Hamlin and Jana Mason.
Stefani Buller scored twice within about a minute of each other, both goals almost identical as she picked up a saved shot that the Miss. Valley keeper could not corral in for an easy tap in.
With today's win Southern Miss completes non-conference action with a respectable 4-2 record and opens C-USA play next weekend with Memphis at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We start a whole new season next weekend. I am confident with what we have done at this point but know that the road in from of us gets a whole lot tougher," Ebke added.
Kickoff vs. the Tigers will be Friday at 4:00 p.m.
