POPLARVILLE, Miss. - - It was the tale of two halves for the Southern Miss soccer team which fell to Memphis 2-0 in the Conference USA opener Friday evening at the Pearl River Athletic Complex.
The Golden Eagles were forced to move their home match to Pearl River Community College because the Southern Miss Soccer Complex field was still unplayable from the amount of rain over the past week on campus.
In the first half, the Golden Eagles held the defending C-USA champions scoreless allowing only six shots to three by Southern Miss, with the black and gold holding a corner kick advantage of 2-1 at the half.
"I thought we played a great first half," head coach Scott Ebke said. "We were really able to disrupt Memphis style of play."
The Tigers opened the second half with a goal in the 51st minute as Ashley Berra hit from about 25 yards straight out. Memphis was able to strike again for the games final goal just under four minutes later in the 55th minute as Berra connected with a cross that Taylor Isenhower finished from inside the box.
In the second half the Memphis outshot Southern Miss 12-2.
"In the second half Memphis showed why they are one of the top teams in the conference, they finished off two great chances which was the difference in the game," Ebke added.
"I am proud of the team for their effort tonight, we were in it until the end,"
The Golden Eagles return to the pitch Sunday afternoon as they host UAB in C-USA play, kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We will now regroup and get ready to play a very talented UAB team on Sunday," Ebke added.
