Baseball Falls for Second Straight Game at Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Southern Miss dropped their second game in a row at Memphis Saturday afternoon, losing 16-6 at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
Southern Miss once again could not get any help on the mound as starter Jeff Stanley only lasted two-thirds of an inning. In all Southern Miss used five pitchers that surrendered 16 runs and 16 hits on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles only managed eight hits in the game, with no player having more that one hit. Michael Ewing had a three-run home run in his only at bat, as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.
Memphis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as the second batter of the inning, Adam McClain, hit a two-run home run over the left field wall. The scoring continued as Shawn Abbott tripled off the right field wall and came in to score on a sacrifice fly, which ended the day for starting pitcher Jeff Stanley.
Stanley lasted only five hitters, allowing three runs on two hits while recording only two outs.
McClain added two more RBI in the bottom of the second inning with a bases loaded single to left field ending the day for Scott Copeland.
The Tigers added two more runs in the second inning on a single to right field by Trey Weidman off Jonathon Johnston, though the runs were charged to Copeland.
Copeland worked two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs on two hits and walking two.
Southern Miss finally cracked the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fourth inning as James Ewing singled and Taylor Walker doubled off the right field wall. Bo Davis platted Ewing with a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 7-1.
Memphis tacked on two more runs as Jacob Wilson hit a bases loaded single off Johnston to drive in two more Tiger Runs and make the score 9-1, ending the day for Johnston.
Ablett extended the Tiger lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the score 11-1.
Matt Warren surrendered the twelth Memphis run of the game on a Jacob Wilson triple followed by an RBI ground out.
Southern Miss added their second run of the game on an Adam Doleac sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning, making the score 12-2.
Memphis got that run right back, then some in the bottom of the eighth inning on a RBI doubles by Daniel Kauffman and Jacob Wilson. Chris Newson added an RBI single and Robbie Graham plated another run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 16-2.
Southern Miss would not go quietly in the ninth as Kameron Brunty tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Corey Stevens single. Nick Smith followed with a double down the left field line and Michael Ewing hit a pinch hit, three-run home run to make the score 16-6.
Southern Miss returns to "The Pete" for a three game series beginning on Thursday against Tennessee Tech. Fans are encouraged to come out and show support for Coach Corky Palmer in his last regular season series at Pete Taylor Park.
On Friday, Southern Miss will offer its `Family Four Pack' in which fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $40. At Saturday's regular season finale the Golden Eagles will recognize the 2009 seniors, and it is also `Bring a Kid to the Park Day' where fans can receive a free child ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.
The 2009 Conference USA baseball tournament will be held at Pete Taylor Park beginning on May 20.
