Baseball Falls in Series Opener to Tulane, 7-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane starting pitcher Jonathan Garrett threw a complete game, five-hitter to defeat Southern Miss 7-2 in the series opener at Pete Taylor Park Friday evening.
"Garrett pitched a great game tonight," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I thought JR (Ballinger) started slow but gave us a chance after that, we did not have a while lot of fight in us tonight, but for some reason we have not played well at home all year."
Garrett (5-1) was outstanding for Tulane, firing a complete game five-hitter, two of which left the park to account for the only Golden Eagle runs of the game, while striking out 13.
Joey Archer and Kameron Brunty each had a solo home run in the game.
JR Ballinger (4-2) had a rocky first inning, surrendering three runs on two hits but settled down over the next five innings, allowing only four hits while striking out eight.
Jonathan Johnston and Wade Weather each allowed two runs in relief.
Tulane opened the scoring in the top of the first with three runs on a Jeremy Schaffer sacrifice fly, Seth Henry RBI double and Steve Moritz check swing RBI ground out.
Joey Archer put Southern Miss on the board in the second inning with his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot over the left-center field wall to make the score 3-1.
Tulane added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning on Henry's two-RBI double off Jonathan Johnston to make the score 5-1.
Schaffer added a two-run home run in the top of the ninth of reliever Wade Weathers to put the Wave up 7-1.
Brunty added the only other Golden Eagle run with a solo shot, his fourth of the season, in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The two teams will return to action for game two if the series tomorrow, first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at "The Pete."
