HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss scored nine runs in their final two at bats to come from behind and defeat Tulane 9-7 Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles used a five-run seventh inning and a four-run eighth inning to erase an 5-0 Tulane lead.
"This is as big of a win as we have had all season at home," Southern Miss head coach Corky Palmer said. "We showed a lot of fight and came from behind today like a lot of the old Southern Miss teams did for years at `The Pete', hopefully this can give us some momentum headed into the final weeks of the season."
Down by five runs in the seventh inning Southern Miss made their charge, putting together their first big inning of the weekend to tie the game at five. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with a Corey Stevens double and walks to BA Vollmuth and Michael Ewing to start the comeback.
Josh Fields drew a two-out bases loaded walk to score Stevens and plate the Golden Eagles first run of the game. James Ewing followed with a routine ground ball to third base that Tulane's Matt Ryan under-threw to first base allowing two runs to score and the inning to continue.
Bo Davis then ripped a double off the left-center field wall to score two more runs and tie the game at five at the end of seven innings.
Tulane answered right back and retook the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a two-RBI double to left-centerfield by Drew Allain off Southern Miss reliever Collin Cargill.
However the Golden Eagles would not quit today, clawing right back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, keyed by Michael Ewing's bases clearing double just inside the right-field line to score three runs and put the black and gold back on top. James Ewing added an insurance run with a RBI single to score Michael Ewing to cap the four eighth inning.
Collin Cargill picked up his third win of the season in relief, working two innings while allowing two runs on three hits and leaving the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning.
Southern Miss starting pitcher Seth Hester did not seem to have an answer for the Tulane bats as he lasted only 2.1 innings before surrendering three runs on five hits.
Kyle Lindsey followed with 3.2 innings or work, allowing two runs on five hits and putting Southern Miss in a 5-0 hole heading into the seventh inning.
Bo Davis was the only Golden eagle with multiple hits, as he collected two hits and two RBI in the game.
Tulane wasted no time getting on the board as leadoff hitter Josh Prince hit the third pitch of the game over the left field wall to give the Wave an early 1-0 lead.
Hester surrendered his second run of the game in the top of the second inning as Seth Henry led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a infield single by Evan Mistich.
Henry hit his second double of the game in the third inning off new Golden Eagle pitcher Kyle Lindsey to score Scott Powell and give the Wave a 3-0 lead, with all three runs charged to Hester.
The third inning rally continued as Steve Moritz singled home Powell to put Tulane up 4-0.
Mistich added a RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to score Moritz and put Tulane up 5-0, before the comeback started in the seventh inning.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the rubber game of the series, first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at "The Pete."
