NEW ORLEANS - Southern Miss managed to salvage the final game of the Tulane series with a 10-8 win Sunday afternoon at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.
Southern Miss hit three home runs on the afternoon with Drew Carson, Chris Matesich and James Ewing each going deep. The Golden Eagles scored 10 runs on five hits and two Green Wave errors. Nine different Golden Eagle players crossed the plate this afternoon.
Collin Cargill picked up his third win of the season throwing four innings allowing only three hits and one unearned run while striking out seven. Houston Brown earned his first career start working 2.2 innings allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Tyler Conn proved to be human after all giving up his first earned run of the season in the eighth inning before picking up his NCAA leading 14th save. He loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings, with a run scoring in the eighth and leaving the bases loaded to end the game in the ninth.
Drew Carson put Southern Miss out to an early lead in the top of the second inning as he blasted his team leading seventh home run of the season, putting the Golden Eagles on top 1-0.
Tulane catcher Jared Dyer answered right back in the bottom of the second to tie the game with a solo home run to right field. The Green Wave took their first lead of the game two batters later when Andrew Rodgers hit another solo home run for a 2-1 Tulane advantage.
Michael Ewing put Southern Miss back on top with a two-run home run scoring Keith Winstead who walked to lead off the inning making the score 3-2.
The bottom of the third was an inning the Southern Miss defense wishes they could forget, with three errors leading to four unearned runs for the Green Wave, including two errors on the same play. Catcher Kyle Maxie had two of the errors, one throwing the ball into right field allowing a run to score then dropping a foul ball that would have retired Rob Segedin, instead Segedin blasted a sole home run put Tulane on top 6-3.
Southern Miss answered right back in the top of the fourth as Trey Cuevas drew a walk a Adam Doleac singled to left field to start the inning. Chris Matesich drilled his fourth home run of the season, a three run shot to tie the game at six.
Tulane added another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on two errors by pitcher Collin Cargill, putting Tulane back on top 7-6 through four frames.
The Golden Eagles batted around in the top of the fifth to score four runs and retake the lead 10-7. James Ewing had an RBI single and Drew Carson hit a sacrifice fly, but the big blow was a throwing error that would have ended the inning with the bases loaded by Anthony Scelfo allowing two unearned runs to score for Southern Miss.
Southern Miss will return to action Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park as they host Mississippi State for a two game series Tuesday and Wednesday.
