Southern Miss Defeats In-State Rival Mississippi State 11-7

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - Southern Miss scored 11 runs on 11 hits to defeat Mississippi State 11-7 in front of 4,525 fans at Pete Taylor Park Tuesday evening.
The Golden Eagles put up 10 runs in the first four frames and got another outstanding game from their relievers to hold the Mississippi State offense in check.
"It was a good night for us, we hit the ball well and our bullpen was outstanding once again," head coach Corky Palmer said.
Seth Hester started his second game of the season, working 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. Jonathan Johnston worked three innings in relief to pick up his first career win, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out three.
Wade Weathers picked up his first career save working 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out four, including leaving the bases loaded in the eighth inning.
The Southern Miss bullpen has been outstanding over the last six games, picking up two wins and three saves while working 27.2 innings and allowing only 20 hits and two earned runs while recording 34 strikeouts.
Bo Davis jump started the offense with three hits, including a double and two runs scored on the night. Brian Dozier had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored in the game as well. Michael Ewing continues to pick up the offensive production with two hits and three RBI on the evening.
Trey Cuevas set a Southern Miss and tied a Conference USA single-game record with five walks in tonight's game. He came around to score twice.
The Golden Eagles wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Bo Davis lined the first pitch of his at bat into the left-center field gap for a leadoff double. Brian Dozier lined the second pitch he saw for an RBI single scoring Davis from second. Trey Cuevas and Kyle Maxie both drew walks to load the bases and Keith Winstead delivered a two-out two-RBI single to put Southern Miss on top 3-0.
Mississippi State rallied right back to tack on two runs in the top of the second inning as Tyler Moore ripped a double off the center field wall and Ryan Duffey singled to right field. Jason Nappi followed with an RBI single to right-center field to put the Bulldogs on the board. Hester was called for a balk to force home Duffy to cut the Golden Eagle lead to one. Grant Houge singled to right field and Nappi was gunned down at home by Michael Ewing as he tried to tie the game at three.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the second inning as Bo Davis singled on a push bunt and Brian Dozier picked up an RBI as he doubled to right-center field. Trey Cuevas drew a walk to chase the Dawgs starting pitcher Tyler Whitney from the game.
New State pitcher Jesse Carver's first pitch was drilled down the left field line by Drew Carson for a double scoring Dozier for a 5-2 Southern Miss lead.
The Golden Eagles broke the game wide open with five runs in the fourth inning. James Ewing led off with a single to right field and Trey Cuevas drew his third walk of the game. Drew Carson advanced both runners with a ground ball and Kyle Maxie drove them home with a two-RBI single up the middle. Keith Winstead drew a walk to end the evening for Lee Swindle on the mound for the Dawgs.
Chris Matesich hit a ground ball to that was a sure double play but shortstop Ryan Powers could not handle to load the bases. Michael Ewing scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch and Matesich cleared the bases with a two-RBI single up the middle giving the Golden Eagles a 10-2 advantage.
Mississippi State answered with a four run fifth inning keyed by Tyler Moore's three run home run over the left field wall making the score 10-6.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth inning as Russ Sneed drew a two-out bases loaded walk to force home Jason Nappi. Southern Miss reliever Wade Weathers entered the game and struck out Ryan Collins for would have been the third out but the ball got past catcher Kyle Maxie to extend the inning and eventually allow the run to score.
Southern Miss added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Michael Ewing added an RBI single scoring Keith Winstead for a 11-7 lead.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Pete Taylor Park with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
