Southern Miss and Tulane Split Doubleheader on Sunday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After being rained out on Saturday, Southern Miss and Tulane split a pair of seven-inning games, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, with the Golden Eagles winning the first game, 5-2, and the Green Wave winning the second game, 7-1, in front of 3,467 in attendance.
With today's victory, Tulane (27-11, 8-4 C-USA) won this weekend's series, 2-1. The Green Wave have now defeated Southern Miss (22-15, 4-8 C-USA) in all but three series (1996, 1999, 2003) since Conference USA was formed in 1996.
In game one, Southern Miss' Barry Bowden (3-3) pitched the first complete game of his career, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits, walking one and striking out four to earn his third win of the season.
In game two, Tulane's Brandon Gomes (5-2) earned the complete-game victory in game two, giving up one unearned run on six hits, walking two and striking out one batter.
In game one, Southern Miss (22-14, 4-7 C-USA) scored five runs on eight hits and committed three errors, while Tulane (26-11, 7-4 C-USA) scored two runs on five hits and committed two errors.
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the first inning and put two more on the board in the fifth inning. Sutton and James Ewing walked to lead off the inning and Cuevas reached on a fielder's choice when Tulane third baseman Tim Guidry dropped an attempt to retire Sutton at third. Michael Ewing hit a single through the right side to plate Sutton, Jody Blount singled to left field to drive in James Ewing and Drew Carson singled through the left side to score Cuevas.
Tulane scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 3-2. Aja Barto hit a solo homer to right center in the third inning, and Nate Simon singled to center to drive in Anthony Scelfo. Scelfo reached on a fielder's choice, then moved to second on an errant throw by pitcher Bowden, advanced to third on a fielding error by third baseman James Ewing when he dropped the throw by shortstop Brian Dozier, trying to retire Scelfo and scored on Simon's single.
Drew Carson doubled to left center to drive in the final two runs for Southern Miss to provide the final outcome, 5-2. Blount and Bailey Hartel each hit one-out singles and then scored on Carson's hit.
Tulane starter Shooter Hunt (6-4) was credited with his fourth loss of the season, pitching five innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking six and striking out seven batters.
Carson finished with two hits and three RBIs, and Blount finished with two hits and one RBI. Simon led the Green Wave with two hits and an RBI, and Barto had one hit and an RBI.
In game two, Tulane scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to the 7-1 win. The Green Wave finished with seven runs on eight hits and committed an error, while Southern Miss finished with one run on six hits.
Cat Everett and Brad Emaus led Tulane with two hits each. Guidry finished with four RBIs and Everett, Anthony Scelfo and Aja Barto each added one RBI.
Tulane's Cat Everett led off the game with a single to center field, Brad Emaus was hit by a pitch and Warren McFadden was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anthony Scelfo was walked to plate Everett, before Guidry hit the grand slam to right center field. Seth Henry hit a one-out double down the left field line and then scored on Barto's double to left field. Everett singled up the middle to drive in Barto for the seventh run of the inning.
The Golden Eagles broke up the shutout in the second inning, scoring a run to provide the final outcome, 7-1. Carson reached on a one-out walk, reached second on a fielding error by Everett and scored on Dozier's single through the left side.
Golden Eagle starter David Clark (4-3) didn't record an out before giving up five earned runs on two hits and walking one batter. Jared Cavenaugh came on in relief of Clark and went two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Tyler Conn pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, three walks and striking out one. Jonathan Johnston pitched 4.2 innings, giving up two hits.
Southern Miss hosts Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m., before hosting UAB for a three-game Conference USA weekend series. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's games starts at 4 p.m., and Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m.
