Baseball Downs Louisiana-Monroe, 16-4, In Midweek Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss' Mike Cashion earned a victory in his second-straight start and the Golden Eagles scored 16 runs on 10 hits to defeat Louisiana-Monroe, 16-4, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,115 in attendance.
Cashion (2-0) pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, one walk and five strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. David Clark pitched two innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out three batters. Tyler Conn and JR Ballinger each pitched an inning and didn't give up a hit. Ballinger struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Brian Dozier led the Golden Eagles with three hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. Jody Blount hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Drew Carson finished with two hits and Michael Ewing, Trey Sutton, James Ewing and Trey Cuevas each had one hit and two RBIs.
Matt Laird, Kyle Suire and Greg Manley led Louisiana-Monroe with two hits each. Laird, Suire, Bo Bowman and A.J. Siggers all finished with an RBI.
WarHawk starting pitcher Daniel Roberts was credited with the loss, pitching two innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit, walking one and striking out three. ULM used seven pitchers for the game.
Southern Miss (23-15) scored 16 runs on 10 hits, while Louisiana-Monroe (23-16) scored four runs on 10 hits and committed five errors.
Louisiana-Monroe led 2-0 after the first inning. Bowman and Siggers both had RBI singles to drive in Laird and Bowman.
Southern Miss answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning when Blount blasted a three-run homer to left field.
Michael Ewing reached on a bases-loaded walk to bring in Sutton to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead in the third inning.
Dozier reached on a single to center field in the fourth inning and scored when shortstop Nick Wade dropped a popup by Sutton. Sutton scored when Cuevas reached on a dropped popup by second baseman Kyle Suire, giving Southern Miss a 6-2 lead.
Suire hit a solo homer to right center in the fifth inning to cut Southern Miss' lead to 6-3.
A single to left field by Dozier, a two-RBI single to center by Sutton and two more WarHawk errors gave the Golden Eagles a 9-3 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Manley hit a one-out double to left center in the sixth inning and then scored when Laird hit a two-out single through the left side to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 9-4.
Southern Miss scored seven runs in the seventh inning to extend its lead to 16-4, its final outcome. Dozier singled through the left side to drive in Carson, James Ewing hit a two-run double down the left field line to drive in Hartel and Dozier, Cuevas hit a two-run single to center field to drive in Sutton and James Ewing and Michael Ewing hit a RBI single to right field to plate Cuevas and Chris Matesich flew out to left field to drive in Blount for the seventh run of the inning.
The Golden Eagles host UAB for the final three games of the current eight-game homestand this weekend, April 20-22. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game starts at 4 p.m. and Sunday's game begins at 1 p.m.
