Field comes to Southern Miss from WLOX-TV, where he served as News Operations Supervisor since 1997.
"After a broad national search that attracted a number of highly qualified candidates, Lee Field rose to the top with his broadcast TV knowledge and experience training qualified people and managing a control room." said Southern Miss Senior Associate AD for External Operations Brad Smith. "We look forward to working with Lee in this incredibly important role for Southern Miss athletics as we continue to offer new and innovative ways for our fans and parents of student –athletes to watch Southern Miss athletics from anywhere in the world."
During his time there, Field managed and oversaw the day-to-day operations of the control room and studio as well as was responsible for all technical aspects of daily live news shows. His duties also included overseeing the creation and execution of station graphics while producing and directing commercial productions.
He hired, trained and managed a crew of 15 employees in studio and control room and worked with the news and sales departments to find solutions for critical needs. In addition, Field created special event programming and graphics for annual PGA Champions Tour Golf Tournament, the Mississippi High School All-Star Football game and Mardi Gras parades.
In 2006, Field was part of a WLOX team that was awarded the Peabody Award for Journalism Excellence for its extensive coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
Field supervised WLOX's transition of the station's studio and control room conversion from analog to HD, including selecting equipment and designing a new control room and supervised the training of all news department, studio and control room personnel on HD equipment.
Since 2002, Field also worked as a freelance television director and graphics operator, in which he directed and produced high school sports for Alabama High School Athletic Association as well as a variety of college and pro sports. Prior to his hiring, he served as a director of Southern Miss football and basketball on ESPN3 and house board shows.
In his new role with the Golden Eagles, Field will manage all of the Southern Miss internal broadcasts, both over-the-air and the internet, as well as oversee all of the department's video needs.
