HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Setter Allie Hazelwood picked up her fourth Sun Belt Conference Setter of the Week award of the season Tuesday, earning the honor for the second consecutive week after helping Southern Miss sweep its series at ULM and remain undefeated on the road in conference play.
The Golden Eagles led the Sun Belt in hitting percentage this week at .272 and ranked second in kills per set, averaging 14.71. Hazelwood handed out 86 assists and led the conference with 12.29 assists per set. Her 42 assists Thursday were the most by any Sun Belt player in a three-set match this week. Hazelwood extended her streak of 40-plus assists in a match to four Friday, finishing with 44 assists and 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She also recorded three solo blocks and two block assists, setting a new season high with five total blocks. Hazelwood continues to lead the Sun Belt in assists per set this season, averaging 10.87, which ranks seventh nationally.
The senior setter has benefited from an elite Southern Miss that defense has helped keep the offense in motion all season long, averaging 16.77 digs per set to lead the Sun Belt and rank ninth nationally. The Golden Eagles have turned those defensive plays into additional chances on offense, leading the conference in attacks per set with 37.59, the nation's 10th-best mark.
With her fourth weekly award this season, Hazelwood becomes the first Southern Miss player to earn four "of the week" awards in a season since Catherine Repsher collected four Freshman of the Week honors in 2016. She is also the first Golden Eagle to earn four Setter of the Week awards in a season in program history.
