Southern Miss Ends Season with 15-11, 10-Inning Loss to Virginia Saturday in NCAA Hattiesburg Regional

With the loss, the Golden Eagles (44-17) saw their season end as it was the first tournament of any kind that they were eliminated in two games since the 2022 Hattiesburg Super Regional.
Tucker Stockman led the Golden Eagles with two hits and five RBI, while Davis Gillespie added two hits and four RBI. Joe Urban notched a team-high three hits, while Matthew Russo and Drey Barrett each added two hits.
In a game that saw four lead changes and one tie, the game was knotted 11-11 to open the 10th.
A.J. Gracia, who went 5-for-5 for the Cavaliers with five RBI, opened the final frame with a double. After a walk, the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen for the fourth time in Camden Sunstrom. After a walk to load the bases, it looked like they might get out of trouble with a double play that went from Barrett at third to Stockman at the plate and then to Russo at first base.
Zach Jackson, though, followed with a two-run single through the left side to give the Cavaliers the lead and Kyle Johnson, who opened the game at pitcher as well as the designated hitter, homered over the center field wall, to complete the scoring.
Thomas Crabtree, who pitched 2 1/3 solid frames, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts, started the 10th and suffered the loss to fall to 2-3.
The Golden Eagles were down 9-6 in the eighth when they rallied for three runs. Urban opened the frame with a walk. After a strikeout, Gillespie walked and Russo collected an infield single to load the bases. Barrett then drove I the first run with a single to right, before Stockman knocked in two more runs with a double, but Barrett was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
Virginia opened the game with a double before Gracia knocked in his first run of the contest with a single up the middle.
Southern Miss took their first lead of the contest with a Stockman three-run homer, his seventh, and the Golden Eagles led 3-1. The designated visitors came right back with three of their own on a Joe Tiroly three-run homer to left center, his 16th, and the Cavaliers led 4-3.
Another three-run home run, this time from Gillespie in the bottom of the third, gave the Golden Eagles a 6-4 advantage off his 15th of the season.
It only took to the next inning for the Cavaliers to retake the lead as they exploded for five more runs off starter Grayden Harris in the fourth. The big blow was a three-run triple from Gracia and UVA led 9-6 at that point.
UVA reliever Max Stammel (4-5) threw the final 1 1/3 innings, fanning three to earn the victory.
Five Golden Eagle pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts in the contest.
The Cavaliers (37-22) play the loser of the No. 4 Little Rock and No. 3 Jacksonville State matchup which was played later Saturday evening.
