Beach Volleyball Splits Day One of FSU Challenge

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Southern Miss (11-16, 3-1 Sun Belt) split its first day at the FSU Challenge with a loss to No. 8 Loyola Marymount (20-5, 5-0 West Coast) before rallying to down Jacksonville (14-12, 1-6 Atlantic Sun).
The Golden Eagles look to wrap up the competition tomorrow with two duals against No. 5 Florida State (22-2, 6-1 Big 12) and a second dual against Jacksonville.
No. 8 Loyola Marymount 5, Southern Miss 0
The Lions, winners of nine straight entering the week, jumped out to an early lead over Southern Miss and never looked back. Josephine Schackel and Liv Johnson took the first point of the dual at the fours before second pairing Chloe Hooker and Ines Piret made it 2-0 for LMU.
Katie McAllister and Ellie Davis clinched the dual with a fifth pairing win for the Lions before two more Lion wins at the third and first flights gave LMU the 5-0 sweep. The Golden Eagles' top flight of Sadie McAda (Pleasanton, Texas) and Laurel Dennis (Gulfport, Miss.) pushed the LMU 1s to extra points in the second set before falling 26-24.

Southern Miss took a dual off before returning to take on Jacksonville for the second time in series history. Kitija Martini Adamsone (Maurpe, Latvia) and Giovanna Gurgel Bahia (Recife, Brazil) got the Golden Eagles on the board with a two-set win by medical forfeit in the third pairing. Martini and Bahia led 6-0 in the second set before an injury forced the Jacksonville pairing to forfeit the set and point.
Zuzanna Michalska (Warsaw, Poland) and Abby Lewis (The Woodlands, Texas) made it 2-0 for the Golden Eagles with a two-set win at the second pairing. The Dolphins then took the fifth pairing in two sets before tying the overall dual 2-2 with a three-set thriller at the top flight from Megan Hair and Claire Mrukowski.
All eyes turned to the fourth pairings where Iustina Corcoz (Bucharest, Romania) and Y-Nhu Do (Cary, N.C.) forced a third set after with a 21-18 second set. The Golden Eagle duo hled on to take the deciding set 17-15 and clinch the overall dual for Southern Miss.
