HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road this weekend for a big Sun Belt Conference series in Mobile, where they take on South Alabama at Eddie Stanky Field.
Â
The No. 18 Golden Eagles (29-12 overall, 11-7 Sun Belt) opens with the Jaguars (25-16, 10-8) Friday with a 6:30 p.m., contest and all three games can be seen on ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
Southern Miss sits in second place in the league standings, four games behind leader Coastal Carolina. They are a game up on this weekend's opponent, South Alabama, as well as App State and Troy, which are two teams the Golden Eagles have already won series against this season. Four other SBC squads sit at 9-9, including Texas State, Arkansas State, ULM and Marshall.
Â
Heading into the weekend, the program holds a four-game winning streak after collecting a pair of walk-off victories over Texas State and Tulane in their last two contests.
Â
While the Golden Eagles trail in the series with South Alabama 69-47, Southern Miss has won nine of the last 11 games in the series and are 7-2 against the Jaguars since joining the Sun Belt in 2023.
Â
Former South Alabama player, Kyle Morrison, makes a return trip to Mobile this weekend. Morrison, who went 5-for-11 for USA last season that included four runs, two homers and six RBI. He homered to give the Jags the lead in Saturday's win and tied the game in the 9th with an RBI double in the Sunday contest before the Golden Eagles won it in the 12th inning.
Â
Morrison leads the Golden Eagles this season in all three major offensive categories including average (.345), home runs (12) and RBI (37). Should he finish the season at the top of each list, he would become the first Golden Eagle to win a triple crown since Matt Durst did it in 2014.
Â
Following Morrison, the Golden Eagle offense has Joey Urban hitting second at .335, followed by Seth Smith at .321 and Davis Gillespie at .318.
Â
As for on the mound this weekend, Southern Miss will use left-hander Grayden Harris (7-1, 3.20 ERA) in the opener, while right-hander Camden Clark (5-0, 1.69 ERA) is slated to go Saturday and right-hander Camden Sunstrom (3-3, 2.57 ERA) on Sunday.
Â
Following the USA series, the Golden Eagles play their final regular season non-conference game on Tuesday at Tulane. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
