Men’s Golf Wraps Up Day One at Mossy Oak Collegiate

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team opened its last regular-season event at the Mossy Oak Collegiate, hosted by Mississippi State at the Mossy Oak Golf Course. The Golden Eagles completed two rounds in 14th with 593 strokes through 36 holes.
Freshman Jake Moffitt carded four birdies in a 1-under 71 morning round and stayed steady throughout the afternoon with an even-par, adding four more birdies, to finish the day tied for 13th place.
Benjamin Fernandez shot a 4-over 76 to kick the day off, tallying three birdies, and improved in the afternoon, highlighted by an eagle on a par 5 spanning 523 yards, with an even-par, and he finished the day tied for 51st place at 4-over.
Southern Miss shot an 11-over in the first round and gained ground through the second 18 with a 6-over to find a spot in 14th, just five strokes behind a top 10 finish. No. 15 Ole Miss shot a 17-under with a nine-shot lead over Mississippi State, while No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Alabama and Sun Belt opponent South Alabama rounded out the top five.
Walker Wise finished tied for 13th in birdies with eight, five coming from his 1-over morning round and three from the 4-over afternoon round, placing just seven spots behind Fernandez at 58th. Supakorn Amornchaichan sat in 89th place at 13-over followed by Matthew Javier in 97th place at 15-over, who recorded 21 pars to rank in the top 45.
