Softball Completes Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge with 11-6 Win over Presbyterian

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Southern Miss (18-9, 0-0 Sun Belt) strung together seven runs over the final four innings to best Presbyterian (11-14, 0-0 Big South) 11-6 in the Golden Eagles' finale at the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge.
Hannah Christian (Hoover, Ala.) led the game off with a double and quickly advanced to third after a Carrie Green (Loganville, Ga.) single. Green stole second to put two runners in scoring position while Kacey Bennett (Watson, La.) worked a six-pitch walk to reach base safely. The four ball of the at-bat went wild, allowing Christian to score and Green to move up to third base.
Green scored on the next AB as Kinsley Gordon-Sivley (Myrtle, Miss.) grounded out to shortstop. Madison Johnson (Haymarket, Va.) cleared the bases with a two-run homer to set the score 4-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles through a half inning.
Madilyn Graham (Stringer, Miss.) hung a scoreless frame in her first inning of work before the Golden Eagles went down in order to open the second. The Blue Hose grounded out to begin the home half of the second, but quickly put Southern Miss in a bases-loaded situation after a walk, double and another walk. Presbyterian scored on a Golden Eagle error before scoring another run on an infield ground out.
Presbyterian tied the game 4-4 with a two-RBI double on the next at bat, leading Olivia Christian (Hoover, Ala.) to take over in the circle. The Blue Hose worked two more walks in the frame before Christian got out of the inning on a line out, leaving three Blue Hose on base.
After a scoreless top of the third, the Blue Hose quickly got a runner to third on a walk, sacrifice bunt and passed ball. Kayla Giardina (Kenner, La.) entered the circle with two runners on and the Blue Hose chipped an RBI single into to right to take the lead. Another single two at bats later gave Presbyterian a 6-4 lead before a foul out ended the frame.
Gordon-Sivley and Johnson each worked four-pitch walks to begin the fourth, chasing the Blue Hose starter from the game. Nealy McManus (Millport, Ala.) loaded the bases with a single and Hannah Christian brought Gordon-Sivley home with an RBI walk. A pop up ended the inning but Southern Miss now trailed 6-5.
Giardina retired the side in order with two four-pitch strikeouts to send the game to the fifth. Green and Bennett led off the frame with singles before Johnson loaded the bases once again with her second hit of the day. Paris Ferguson (Pearland, Texas) pinch hit and hit the first pitch she saw to center field, scoring Green from third on a SAC-fly to tie the game 6-6.
Giardina again sat the side down in order with two more strikeouts in the fifth, running her total to seven straight batters retired. The Golden Eagles got their first two batters aboard in the sixth before Green broke things open with a two-RBI double to give Southern Miss an 8-6 lead.
Gordon-Sivley scored Green with an RBI single to make things 9-6 and force a change in the circle. Southern Miss grounded out to end the frame but now held a three-run advantage with Giardina settling in in the circle. Giardina sat the Blue Hose down in order for the third consecutive inning, making it 10 batters retired in order.
Ava Segura (Lafayette, La.) led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single as the first three batters all singled in the frame. Green notched Southern Miss' fourth hit of the inning with a two-RBI single to make it an 11-6 margin for the Golden Eagles.
Giardina finished off the Blue Hose on just 10 pitches, making it 13 straight batters retired since the third inning. Giardina earned her eighth win of the campaign, moving to 8-3 on the year while Blue Hose reliever Peyton Duncan suffered the loss, falling to 5-7.
Carrie Green posted a career-high five hits to lead the Golden Eagles with four RBI and three runs scored. The Golden Eagles have now won 11 of their last 12 games and head to Hammond, La., for a midweek matchup against Southeastern. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at North Oak Park.
