HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its six-game homestand this weekend when they play host to North Alabama at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The series opens Friday with a 6 p.m. contest.
All three games of the series can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (11-2) saw an 11-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night in a 3-2 setback to Nicholls. The streak was the longest since a school-record 18 games won in a row late last season. Southern Miss plays host to a North Alabama squad that comes in 7-6, losing a midweek matchup at Ole Miss 8-5 Wednesday night in Oxford.
This will be the second time the Lions have traveled to Hattiesburg for a series. The two schools opened the 2022 season at The Pete together and the Golden Eagles swept those three games in the only meetings between the schools.
Golden Eagle senior Joey Urban continues to lead the squad in offense with a .417 batting mark to go along with team best of four home runs and 16 RBI. Seth Smith ranks next at .400 with a homer and seven RBI, followed by Davis Gillespie at .347 and Kyle Morrison at .302.
Two other Golden Eagles also have double-digit RBI through the first 13 games, including Matthew Russo with 13 and Morrison with 10.
The Golden Eagles will start the trio of right-hander Colby Allen (0-1, 2.45 ERA), left-hander Grayden Harris (2-0, 3.86 ERA) and righty McCarty English (0-0, 4.50 ERA). It marks the same order of starting pitcher over the first four weeks of the regular season.
While Southern Miss has gotten good starting pitching, its relief staff has been outstanding this spring. The bullpen, though, has done excellent by posting a 9-0 record with a 2.51 ERA and compiling 88 strikeouts while allowing just 26 walks in 68 innings of work.
Following the UNA series, the Golden Eagles close out the homestand with Ole Miss on Tuesday, March 10. That game starts at 6 p.m.
