HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After nearly a month away from home, Southern Miss (7-7, 1-2 SBC) returns to the USM Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon to host New Orleans at 2 p.m. The match opens a brief homestand for the Golden Eagles, who will also host Tulane next week before heading back on the road for the final stretch of the regular season.
Southern Miss comes back to Hattiesburg after a long run of road matches that tested the lineup in conference and nonconference play. Along the way, the Golden Eagles picked up a 4-0 win at Southern and most recently dropped a 4-1 match at Troy, where Miranda Xu earned the team's lone point with a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles. That stretch pushed Southern Miss into the closing weeks of the season with home dates now at a premium.
Wednesday gives the Golden Eagles a chance to settle back into familiar surroundings and build momentum before the schedule tightens even more. Southern Miss has just two home matches left on the regular season slate, making this matchup an important opportunity to reset after six straight away from Hattiesburg.
New Orleans brings in a team that has shown recent form of its own. The Privateers are coming off a 4-3 win over Southeastern, a match in which they claimed the doubles point and picked up singles wins across the top of the lineup. Earlier results show the Privateers at 6-5 this spring, giving Southern Miss another solid midweek test before the Golden Eagles turn their attention back to the final push of the season.
Southern Miss will have Hannah Chambers, Gagana Mohan Kumar, Sakura Sudo, Miranda Xu, Kamornwan Kornsila, Pimmada Lim, Mia Hasashi-Morrissey, Celine Mosteanu, Manuella Persson and Angelina Blinova available for Wednesday's match.
