BILOXI, Miss. – Eight different Southern Miss pitchers limited Nicholls to four hits as the No. 12 Golden Eagles blanked the Colonels 4-0 Tuesday night at Keesler Federal Park in front of 3,023.
The Golden Eagles (17-4) snapped a two-game losing streak to the Colonels (11-12) as they registered their second shutout of the season.
Dylan Causey started for the Golden Eagles and worked around two hits in his inning stint. He was then relieved by Bruce Littleton, Camden Sunstrom, Teague Broadhead, JW Armistead, Colby Allen, Josh Och and Camden Clark as the Colonels registered just five base runners after the first inning on two singles and three walks.
Littleton walked a pair of hitters in the second and was relieved by Sunstrom who retired all eight batters he faced, which included three strikeouts, to earn the victory and improve to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles scored in each of the middle innings to pull ahead in the contest.
Ben Higdon drove in the first run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to the shortstop in short left field in the fourth to start the scoring.
Kyle Morrison, who was the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits collecting a pair of doubles, recorded an RBI two-base hit in the fifth, before Seth Smith knocked in a run on a fielder's choice in the sixth and Gray Eubanks completed the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Nicholls starter Dawson Richard (2-1) went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they play host to Troy in the first of a three-game Sun Belt series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time for the opener is 6 p.m.
