HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss outfielder Joey Urban collected his first Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honor Tuesday after leading the Golden Eagles to a 4-0 mark this past week, including a championship in the Round Rock Classic.
The senior from Jupiter, Fla., helped extend the Golden Eagles current win streak to six games as he finished the week hitting .462 (6x13) with two runs, a triple, a home run and seven RBI, driving in at least one run in all four games.
Urban started the week by reaching base in all five plate appearances against SLU, which included two singles and three walks. His ninth-inning single knocked in the go-ahead run as the Eagles went on to score twice in a 3-1 road victory.
Although he did not get a hit in the Round Rock opener against Purdue, he did draw a walk and helped the Golden Eagles with a four-run fourth inning against the Boilermakers by collecting a sacrifice fly as Southern Miss won 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
Against nationally ranked Oregon State, Urban was a double shy of the cycle as he drove in four runs in the contest and added a walk. His first-inning solo home run opened the game's scoring and his sixth-inning, one-out triple started a Golden Eagle rally which resulted in a three-run inning, allowing Southern Miss the opportunity to take the lead for good. He helped extend the lead with a two-run single in the seventh, before drawing a bases loaded walk for his final RBI in the contest.
In the finale against Baylor, he drove in the game's first run in the fourth with a single and added a walk later in the contest.
For his efforts over the weekend, Urban was selected to the Round Rock Classic all-tournament team.
The Golden Eagles (6-1) return to action tonight as the welcome Alabama (7-1) to Pete Taylor Park for a midweek tilt. Game time is set for 6 p.m., and can be seen on ESPN+, as well as hard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
