HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Fresh off sweeping three games at the Round Rock Classic, the Southern Miss baseball team returns home Tuesday to face long-time rival Alabama in a 6 p.m. game at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (6-1) jumped up to No. 12 nationally in the latest D1Baseball.com poll on the strength of having won six in a row, including victories over Purdue, nationally ranked Oregon State and Baylor last weekend.
Four Golden Eagles earned Round Rock Classic all-tournament honors including outfielders Joey Urban and Davis Gillespie, along with designated hitter Caleb Stelly and relief pitcher Camden Sunstrom.
Urban, who drove in six runs over the weekend, leads the Golden Eagles this season in batting with a .458 batting average to go along with two home runs and a team-best nine RBI. Gillespie also has two home runs as the team has slugged nine over the first seven games, including a go-ahead two-run blast Saturday versus Oregon State.
Stelly collected two hits and drew walk in the tournament and is currently hitting .280 on the year. Sunstrom threw four scoreless frames against OSU and notched a career-best eight strikeouts in earning his first career save.
After losing the season opener, Alabama (7-1) has reeled off seven consecutive wins including a three-game sweep at home over Rhode Island over the weekend.
The two programs last met in the 2025 NCAA Hattiesburg Regional, and the Golden Eagles captured a 6-5 decision to eliminate the Crimson Tide from the postseason. That win for Southern Miss extended their home winning streak over the Tide to five, which goes back to the 2014 season. This will be the only meeting between the two clubs this season.
Following the Alabama contest, the Golden Eagles go back on the road for a three-game weekend series at Louisiana Tech. The series begins on Friday at 6 pm.
