RUSTON, La. – Southern Miss softball (7-8) drops rubber match against Louisiana Tech (12-3) concluding a pitching duel. The Bulldogs were victorious, 4-1, with starting pitcher Allie Floyd pitching a complete game to pick up her fourth win of the season.
The afternoon started with a pair of three-up three-down outings from LA Tech's Floyd and Kayla Giardina. The duel continued in the second where Floyd fanned three straight, where Giardina picked up her first strikeout of the day and closing the frame out with a line drive and a failed bunt attempt.
The Golden Eagles attempted to get ahead with a pair of two out walks in the third, falling short with a foul out to leave both runners stranded. The Bulldogs capitalized on the opportunity with a lead off bunt single down the third base line. After a SAC bunt and a ground out, Elena Heng was on third base for Bradi Gallaway's two out RBI single to left giving LA Tech the lead 1-0.
Giardina got back to work, after a quick top of the fourth, retiring three of four batters with a Bulldog reaching on an error. Abbi Troquille led the inning off finding a way on base after a fielding error to third. With Kinsley Gordon-Sivley laying down a SAC bunt, Nealy McManus hits a SAC fly to deep right getting Troquille to tag up and score and tie the game up at 1-1.
LA Tech rebounded with a two-out rally, after Giardina got the first two batters to ground out and pop out. Gallaway roped a double to left center, allowing Gracie Flores to turn on the jets and score from first base. The Bulldogs were able to pull away in the bottom of the sixth inning with another two-out rally off back-to-back RBI hits off the six and seven hole, in Allie Furr and Heng, bringing the lead to 4-1.
Floyd wrapped up the top of the seventh and the series, after Troquille attempted to spark something for the Golden Eagles with a leadoff single and advancing on a passed ball, recording a foul out to left, a fly out to right and a line out to third.
