Men’s Golf Place Top Five Concluding Opening Round at the Dorado Beach Collegiate

DORADO, Puerto Rico. – Men's golf conclude day one at the Dorado Beach Collegiate tied-for fifth in line with Butler and just behind George Mason, Stetson, University of North Carolina Greensboro and Elon.
Freshman Jake Moffitt went low for Southern Miss, paving the way for the top five finish with his one-under 71 picking up 11 pars through the first 18 of the event. The Ben Hogan award winner had four birdies with three coming from par 4s and cementing a tied-for eighth finish. Benjamin Fernandez notched an even 72 to place him tied-for 13th with six birdies on the day, four coming from the front nine.
The Golden Eagles shot a 293 with first place only being five strokes in front of the top five grouping. Matthew Javier and Tommy Latter rounded out the scoring for Southern Miss with Javier playing a clean front nine to post a one-over 73 landing him tied-for 17th. Latter logged a five-over 77 placing him in a tie-for 58t with three birdies and eight pars on the day.
Southern Miss lead the event tied with George Mason in birdies etching 17. Moffitt and Fernandez are among the nine who went one-under on par 3s trailing Butler's Derek Tabor who went two-under. Fernandez trails Tabor, who leads the competition in birdies, by one with his six.
Round two will begin tomorrow, Feb. 23, at 6:30 a.m. with another shotgun start with Moffitt beginning on hole five, Fernandez on hole six, Javier on hole seven, Latter on 8, Supakorn Amornchaichan on nine and Walker Wise on hole 17A.
