Golden Eagles Top Troy Behind Weeks' 30 Points in the Second Half

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tylik Weeks scored 30 points in the second half as Southern Miss (14-14, 7-8 Sun Belt) stormed back to beat Troy (17-10, 9-5 Sun Belt) 69-65. The win was the ninth of the year for Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles now have 44 at The Greenhouse over the last four seasons.
Southern Miss got another monster night from Djahi Binet, who picked up a career-high 18 rebounds. He added 14 points for his ninth double-double of the season. Isaac Taveras joined Weeks and Binet in double figures with 11 points, while Curt Lewis finished with eight.

How it Happened
A 6-0 run from Southern Miss in the first 4:30 minutes gave a spark to Reed Green Coliseum as the Golden Eagles took an 8-4 lead after a string of defensive stops. The early momentum came from an Isaac Taveras pass to Djahi Binet for a massive alley-oop.
Southern Miss hit a cold streak coming out of the first media timeout, going on a three-minute scoreless drought that included five-straight misses. Troy, though, hit a similar stretch before Kerrington Kiel beat the shot clock from way downtown to make it 10-9 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. The bright spot for Southern Miss was the early shooting of Curt Lewis as he hit two three-pointers to account for the triples of the game for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles started the game 7-for-24 from the field but clung to a 16-14 lead at the under-eight media timeout. The Southern Miss defense had forced six turnovers, while the offense was limited to only two turnovers just days after having 15 in the first half against South Alabama. Southern Miss pushed its lead to seven after Taveras hit a reverse dunk that made the roof pop off The Greenhouse.
Troy ended the half on a 9-2 run after Taveras' dunk as the Trojans hit a shot with 10 seconds left to send the teams to half tied at 26-all. The Golden Eagles got eight points each from Taveras and Lewis in the half, while Binet grabbed eight rebounds. Troy came out in the second half and scored the first five points before Binet found the basket.
Tylik Weeks started to come alive in the second half, scoring six points for Southern Miss in three minutes. He and Binet both cut it to a two-point game on back-to-back trips down the floor, but Troy got a big three-pointer that pushed the lead back to five with 12:23 to go. The Golden Eagles went over four minutes without a field goal, which allowed Troy to maintain an eight-point advantage with 8:20 left on the clock.
Southern Miss, though, punched right back with a 12-1 run that was capped with a Binet jumper to give the home team the lead. The run was part of a stretch where Weeks scored 16-straight points. The Golden Eagle defense also stepped up big, forcing a turnover that resulted in two of Southern Miss' 21 fast-break points.
After Binet scored on consecutive possessions, Weeks went back to score eight-straight to give Southern Miss a three-point lead. Behind Weeks' 30 second-half points, Southern Miss held off Troy as Dylan Brumfield and Taveras iced the game from the free-throw line.
Southern Miss finished with 10 steals and eight blocks, which were both almost season highs. The Golden Eagles did tie their season high in offensive rebounds with 18, though. It tied the 18 boards on the offensive end against ULM on New Year's Day.
