How it Happened
Old Dominion took the early lead thanks to an 8-0 run. The Monarchs started 3-for-3 from deep as they pulled ahead with the hot shooting. Trailing 15-6, Southern Miss got a baseline drive from Isaac Taveras that moved the Golden Eagles to 4-for-5 in their last five attempts. Meanwhile, Old Dominion was 4-for-4 in that stretch – both teams were shooting 66.7 percent at the first media timeout.
The Golden Eagles answered with an 8-0 run of their own to cut it to a one-point game in less than 90 seconds. The run featured a pair of Tylik Weeks and-ones and a put-back layup from Isaac Taveras. Despite that momentum, Southern Miss had already turned the ball over eight times in the first nine minutes. That allowed the Monarchs to extend the lead back to six points by the under-12 media timeout.
Old Dominion pushed its run to 12-2 before Southern Miss finally got some scoring going. Chiante' Tramble threw an alley-oop to Djahi Binet that got the crowd going, and then the defense forced its 10th shot clock violation on the next possession. The Monarch offense was scoreless for over three minutes as Southern Miss cut the deficit to seven.
That didn't last long, though, as Old Dominion hit three three-pointers in a row to push the lead to 18, which was its largest of the half. A flurry of turnovers didn't help the Golden Eagles, as they had 18 in the first half. Southern Miss managed to go on a 15-4 run to end the half, which made it 47-40 at the break.
Izzy Hart hit a pair of treys in that stretch, while Weeks had a tough layup to end it with 24 seconds left in the half. The Golden Eagles went 3-for-4 from deep in the half and shot 64 percent from the floor. Both Weeks and Hart had double-digit points at the half with 14 and 11, respectively.
Southern Miss tied the game at 50-50, not even three minutes into the second half, after going on a 6-0 run. The minutes prior, though, had some fireworks as both teams picked up flagrant fouls on each end of the floor. The Monarchs benefited from a pair of free throws, but they went on a three-minute scoreless stretch. Isaac Taveras gave Southern Miss its first lead of the day at 54-52 after he stole a loose ball and went down for a huge dunk, which got The Greenhouse faithful on their feet.
The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to five after Hart made his third trey of the day. Old Dominion got it back to a one-point game after a pair of layups with 12:05 left in the game. Southern Miss continued to extend its lead as Hart made it seven with two free throws at the 8:37 mark. It then got to eight after a massive alley-oop from Taveras and Binet.
Old Dominion was 1-for-7 in a two-minute scoring drought with Southern Miss calling a timeout to slow the game down. The Golden Eagles went into the timeout with a 74-67 lead and four players in double figures. Hart knocked down his fourth three-pointer on the following possession and handed the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the night at 10.
However, that was one of Southern Miss' last field goals of the game. The Golden Eagles went 1-of-5 after that over the final five minutes. That allowed Old Dominion to go on a 6-0 run and cut the Southern Miss advantage to one with 2:35 left on the clock. Weeks ended that run with the final make of the day for Southern Miss on a huge and-one.
That basket was the last for either team as both shot free throws the rest of the way. The Monarchs managed to get with two with 17 seconds left after a pair of free throws went in, but Weeks and Binet went 3-for-4 in the final 15 seconds to ice the win. The biggest defensive plays of the game were by Dalyn Brandon, as he had two blocks in the final minute, including one that would have tied the game for Old Dominion.
