HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It took overtime for the third-straight game against Texas State (9-8, 2-3 Sun Belt), but Southern Miss (10-7, 4-1 Sun Belt) held on for an 80-70 win over the Bobcats on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
The win gives Southern Miss its best start in league play since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons – both were later vacated. Officially, it's the best start since the 2011-12 season. The Golden Eagles also upped their record to 5-1 at The Greenhouse this season.

How it Happened
Dylan Brumfield started the scoring for the third time this season as he drove to the hoop for a tough lay-up on Southern Miss' second offensive possession of the game. The two teams traded baskets after that until Texas State went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-6 lead into the first media timeout.
Southern Miss went on a seven-minute-plus scoring drought before Tegra Izay had a big dunk to break the cold streak. Izay later found Felipe Patino cutting down the lane and dished it to the guard, who scored and completed the and-one to make it a two-point game. Tylik Weeks came right back down on the next offensive possession after he got a steal and converted an and-one that tied the game at 16-16.
Another drought hit the Golden Eagles late in the second half as it went six minutes without a field goal. The only thing helping in that stretch was that Texas State only made one basket. Brumfield snapped the funk with a contested jumper that gave Southern Miss a 23-22 lead with 3:04 left in the half.
Djahi Binet gave the Golden Eagles a three-point lead on an explosive drive, but a jumper and three-pointer gave Texas State the lead right back with a minute left on the clock. Each team missed a shot in the final minute before Curt Lewis unleashed a step-back three-pointer at the buzzer to put Southern Miss ahead at the half.
Southern Miss came out in the second half looking to be in rhythm after Binet scored on the first possession, but what followed was a four-minute scoring drought. At the same time, Texas State was on an 8-0 run that gave the Bobcats a 36-31 lead. A quick media timeout flipped the switch as the Golden Eagles used a flurry of points to cut into the Texas State lead and then took the lead on a Binet jumper that was part of a 9-3 run.
It turned into an 11-4 run and a three-point lead for Southern Miss after Tylik Weeks made a jumper. Weeks took over for the moment as he had nine points in a five-minute stretch. Chiante' Tramble and Curt Lewis followed with back-to-back three-pointers that gave Southern Miss a 54-48 lead and forced Texas State to take a timeout. Texas State answered with an 11-5 run, but Southern Miss countered with a Weeks layup and a Tramble three to push it right back to a six-point game.
Mark Drone hit a pair of big three-pointers for Texas State that quieted the Reed Green Coliseum crowd, which led to four lead changes over the final three minutes. Drone gave Texas State a one-point lead with 1:16 left and then Weeks made the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game.
Both teams had good looks at a game-winner down the stretch, but neither could convert as the game headed to overtime for the third-straight meeting. That's when Brumfield and Weeks took over, combining for 11 of Southern Miss' 15 points. Texas State scored only three points over the final four minutes of overtime and only made one field goal in the overtime period.
Southern Miss went 5-for-6 from the floor in the overtime period and 5-for-8 from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles also went 18-for-24 from the free-throw line over the full game, while Texas State missed eight free-throw attempts.
