Men's Basketball Tops JMU to End Losing Skid

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tylik Weeks reached the 20-point mark for the third-straight game as Southern Miss (12-11, 5-6 Sun Belt) got back on track with a 73-65 win over James Madison (11-12, 4-7 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon.
Dalyn Brandon had a coming out party as well at Reed Green Coliseum, playing a season-high 24 minutes in his second start of the season. Brandon finished with eight points, three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Southern Miss had nine players score at least two points, while Dylan Brumfield joined Weeks in double figures with 10 points.

How it Happened
Izzy Hart scored back-to-back buckets for Southern Miss to help the Golden Eagles take an 8-4 lead four minutes into the game. The first of Hart's baskets came after Dalyn Brandon forced a JMU turnover off a missed free throw that led to an easy layup on the inbounds pass.
His latter basket came after he drew an offensive foul on James Madison and then got a dish from Tylik Weeks for the score. That put Southern Miss on a 6-0 run in 1:21. Weeks turned it into an 8-0 run after he banked in a floater out of the first media timeout.
Dalyn Brandon made the most of his start and hit a corner three that put Southern Miss ahead 15-11. Tylik Weeks then put the Golden Eagles ahead 17-14 after he made Southern Miss' third-straight field goal in that stretch.
Brandon later added a dunk on a pass from Chiante' Tramble that put the Golden Eagle sup 24-17 with just under seven minutes to play in the half. James Madison was able to cut the score to a three-point game after Southern Miss went on a three-minute scoring drought. Brumfield broke the drought with a pair of free throws, but the stretch of no field goals was extended to six minutes.
Curt Lewis finally hit a field goal on a corner three that put Southern Miss up by eight with 30 seconds left in the half. The defense forced a stop with one second left on the clock, and Lewis had a half-court look, but it fell short and sent Southern Miss to the half with a 29-21 lead.
Tylik Weeks scored the first four points of the half for Southern Miss, but the Golden Eagles only had one field goal in the first four minutes of the half. Hart, though, went on a quick stretch of good defense and good offense as he forced a steal and scored to put the Golden Eagles back up by eight.
Southern Miss was forced to use a timeout after James Madison went on an 8-2 run that saw Southern Miss go over five minutes without a field goal. The Dukes later took the lead after a 5-0 run out of the timeout. Weeks finally broke the scoring drought with just under 10 minutes to play in the game.
Weeks put Southern Miss on a 6-0 run to regain control right before the under-eight media timeout. That put him at 16 points, which was a game-high at that point. Weeks went on to score 14-straight points for Southern Miss that put the Golden Eagles up by 10.
Weeks got the crowd going on a left-handed slam and then Brandon blew the roof off with a putback slam. That gave him seven points on the game, his most in Sun Belt play this season. Djahi Binet then followed with a slam of his own that gave the Golden Eagles all the momentum with 2:34 to play.
Southern Miss made eight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win, but Binet put the dagger in the game with his second dunk, which put the advantage at 10. Cliff Davis, who led the Dukes in scoring, managed to hit a few shots at the end to cut the final score to an eight-point game.
Southern Miss shot the ball at a 50 percent clip in the second half and went 24-for-28 from the free throw line, while James Madison missed eight of their 20 free throw attempts. Weeks scored 24 in the final 20 minutes after only having four points in the first half.
