How it Happened
Izzy Hart hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Southern Miss a quick 8-2 lead. Dalyn Brandon followed about three minutes later with a corner three that put the Golden Eagles up 11-4.
Dylan Brumfield drained a pull-up jumper two possessions later that gave Southern Miss a 13-6 lead and a 5-for-8 start from the floor. Djahi Binet picked up a big block and a rebound out of the first media timeout, which turned into a Tylik Weeks basket on the other end.
Binet added a tough layup to give Southern Miss a nine-point lead, but the Golden Eagles went the next three-plus minutes without a basket. Thankfully for them, Marshall was also on a cold streak, having missed its last seven from the floor. The Herd found some life with a 6-0 run after breaking the drought, which forced Southern Miss to burn a timeout with a17-14 lead.
Curt Lewis broke the 4:22 scoring drought with a corner three-pointer for Southern Miss' fourth trey of the game. Lewis then hit another opposite corner three-pointer that put the Golden Eagles back up by six with just over nine minutes left in the half. Southern Miss found its mojo in a big way after Fallou Diagne added another three-pointer before Hart finished a tough layup to put the Golden Eagles up six.
Binet ended a 1-for-7 stretch for the Golden Eagles after he blew by a Marshall defender at the top of the key. That gave the Golden Eagles a 34-29 lead with 4:24 left in the half. Marshall was on a 1-for-5 stretch as well, but Noah Otshudi drained a pull-up jumper to give the Herd their 12th field goal of the half.
Despite the quick burst from Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles went the next three minutes without a field goal as Marshall cut it to a four-point game. Binet reached double figures with a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half, which put Southern Miss up 38-34.
Binet's free throws were the last points of the half for both teams as both had good looks for baskets but couldn't score. Dylan Brumfield forced a Marshall turnover with two seconds left in the half, but couldn't get a last-second heave off, which made it 38-34 in favor of Southern Miss at the half.
Heading into the second half, Southern Miss was 1 for its last 11 before Brumfield stole the ball for a quick score to open the half. The Golden Eagles, though, went the next 2:24 without a point before Weeks took advantage of a pair of free throws. Southern Miss went almost seven minutes with no field goals as Marshall tied the game at 46.
Binet also made a pair of free throws in that span and finally gave Southern Miss a made basket as he reached 19 points with his third three-pointer of the season. The Herd later went on a 6-0 run in less than a minute that gave Marshall its first lead of the game. The run pushed to 10-straight and a five-point lead with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Marshall worked its way to a 15-2 run and a 61-53 lead after starting the second half 11-for-17 from the floor. The Herd also hit five of their first six three-pointer attempts of the half. The Golden Eagles continued a cold streak shooting the ball and had to work at the free-throw line. Southern Miss managed to trim the deficit back to four, but back-to-back three-pointers extended the lead back to nine.
The Golden Eagles made some key shots over the final minutes that kept them in the game, but Marshall took advantage of free throws, hitting a pair after a big Hart three-pointer made it a five-point game. The advantage was pushed back to seven after free throws, and then Brewer Carruth hit a three-pointer to make it a four-point game with 54 seconds left.
Southern Miss then forced a turnover after Binet made it a three-point game. Carruth took a Marshall pass that led to a Brumfield layup. That made it 78-77 with four seconds to play. The Golden Eagles had a good look at a three-pointer before that layup, but failed to take the shot. Marshall iced the win with three free throws over the final three seconds.
Despite no field goals over the final four minutes of the half, Marshall shot the ball at a 68 percent clip over the final 20 minutes. Southern Miss shot the ball at a 41.1 percent clip for the game and shot 45.5 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles won the free-throw battle, going 21-for-30 from the charity stripe.
