Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Battle Marshall at Reed Green Coliseum
1/21/2026 5:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball returns to its home floor for the first time since Jan. 3 to take on long-time rival Marshall on Thursday evening at Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff in the 31st all-time meeting between Southern Miss and Marshall is set for 5 p.m. to assist with the Herd's altered travel plans due to Winter Storm Fern.
Southern Miss will celebrate its students' return to campus with different promotions throughout the game, as well as honoring the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during the game. Fans can watch the game on ESPN+ in the ESPN app or bundle, tune in on 92.7 WFOR-FM or on the Southern Miss Sports Network or purchase tickets today at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
The Lady Eagles (11-7, 4-3 Sun Belt) are back in Hattiesburg after three games and 18 days away from home. Southern Miss finished 1-2 in that stretch of Sun Belt Conference play and looks to rebound after its most-recent loss at Arkansas State on Jan. 17. Four double-figure scoring efforts were not enough to overcome 26 turnovers as Arkansas State held off the Lady Eagles' late game heroics to win 81-71 at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Ark.
Whitney Hart (Baton Rouge, La.) enjoyed a breakout performance, scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead Southern Miss in both categories in just her 14th career game and second career start. The redshirt freshman is poised for a strong finish to 2025-26 after entering the starting lineup in place of Sakyia White (Tuscaloosa, Ala.).
Marshall (15-5, 6-2 Sun Belt) endured a rough stretch last week in the start of a four-game road swing dropping contests at James Madison and Old Dominion. The Herd jumped out to 6-0 in Sun Belt play and still hold a 15-5 record and 101 NET rating despite recent setbacks. Just two conference games have been decided by more than 10 points, a 13-piont win over App State (Dec. 17) and last week's 37-point loss at James Madison (Jan. 15).
Outside of those two games, Marshall has played six Sun Belt games to within 10 points and holds a 5-1 record in those contests. The Herd have also played three overtimes games in league play this season, finishing 2-1 in those games.
Second-year head coach Juli Fulks is now 30-24 overall at Marshall and a dominant 530-168 in her 22-year career. She arrived in Huntington last season to take over for Kim Caldwell and has already matched her first season's win total of 15 this season. The Herd are led by senior guard transfer Tamaya Lewis-Eutsey, who paces the squad in points per game (17.1), assists (71) and steals (71).
Lewis-Eutsey and Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) are the only players averaging over 20.0 points per game in Sun Belt Conference action.
Thursday's game also marks the 31st all-time meeting between Southern Miss and Marshall and will occur exactly 20 years after the first-ever meeting between the squads, which occurred on Jan. 22, 2006. The two teams played for 15 consecutive seasons from 2005-06 until the 2020-21 campaign, all under the Conference USA banner. Southern Miss is 17-13 all-time against Marshall and 9-4 at Reed Green Coliseum. Southern Miss 54-48 win last season, also affected by winter storms, snapped a five-game Marshall streak dating back to 2020.
