MADISON, Wis. -- Southern Miss men's golf topples the 14-team field at the Badger Invitational etching a 23-under 841 to take home first-place in back-to-back tournaments, since the 1979-80 season with head coach Larry Albers at the forefront. Head coach Eddie Brescher tallies his second team win this season while also sitting 41-2-0 against the nation.
"This group of players is something special. Our entire roster is constantly showing how much they are pushing each other to improve. Each time we have team drills, everyone is constantly pushing each other to get better," said Brescher. "That's a huge reason why the guys are showing up in peak form during tournaments."
Freshman Jake Moffitt starts the day firing three birdies and six pars to close out his round two score, sitting at six-under 66. Moffitt kicks off the front nine in round three, two-over with three bogeys but he ends hole nine picking up a birdie. Moffitt closes out the round one-under 71 after picking up four birdies in the back nine and placing tied-for fifth, while recording 17 birdies to lead the field. Junior Benjamin Fernandez started the back nine of round two on par pace picking up three birdies to finish two-under 70. Fernandez comes up big in round three shooting four-under 68 while firing seven birdies over the 18 holes.
The Golden Eagles round out the two-day event at the Badger Invitational on top shooting 279, 278 and 284 to plant Southern Miss in first place, 10 strokes ahead of the two-way tie for second between Southern Illinois and Illinois State at 13-under 851. The victory cements the Golden Eagles at 41-2-0 versus the nation after just the third tournament of the season. The last time Southern Miss won two tournaments in a season was in the 2022-23 season with a victory at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate and the Little Rock Invitational.
"Our donors, alumni and administration are a huge reason why we are in this position. It takes an army of support to build a program," said Brescher. "None of our success is possible without those people."
The Golden Eagles led the field with 70 birdies over the three rounds with help coming from sophomore Matthew Javier and red-shirt junior Walker Wise in round two with the duo recording a one-under 71 apiece and 11 birdies between them. Javier completed round three one-over 73 with four birdies ranking tied-for seventh.
The Mississippi native Will Burnham started the day going par on the back nine of round two finalizing his two-over 74. With a birdie to open round three, the senior shoots an even-par 72 to close out the Badger Invitational with Southern Miss in front. After a difficult back nine in round two from the freshman Grayson Davis played a one-under front nine in round three obtaining two birdies following a hole one bogey. Davis closed out the third round three-over 75 in his second collegiate event of his career.
"Winning is not easy in golf. It requires an amazing amount of mental discipline and self-belief. This team is filled with both. I am so proud of what this program is doing," said Brescher. "To be 41-2 through three events in division one college golf, is awesome. We will continue to implement our practices and processes going forward. Hopefully that will allow us to be in more positions like this in the future.
The Golden Eagles have a weekend off before heading back on the road to Little Rock, Ark. on the calendar for Oct. 13-14 for the Little Rock Buick GMC Classic.
