Men’s Golf Tied for Second Place After Two Rounds of the Little Rock Buick GMC Classic

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.— Southern Miss closes out day one in a tie for second logging 12-under par trailing only the tournament host, Little Rock, on Founders course at Chenal Country Club. The Golden Eagles ended round one 4-under par in a tie for seventh then promptly rose five places with an 8-under par in round two.
Standout freshman, Jake Moffitt started the day off strong with a 5-under 67 in round one obtaining eight birdies in total. The Mississippi native stayed consistent through his second round where Moffitt carded a 70, on the par-72, to help forefront the five place jump from round one until the end of round two going together with his top five individual placement.
After an impressive morning from Moffitt, the top performer for round two was sophomore Matthew Javier who topped the leaderboards with 12 birdies placing him in contention for second place. His efficiency in round one, jotting a 2-under 70, helped carry his momentum into the afternoon, in which he picked up two eagles paired with five birdies, completing his 8-under 64 only two strokes shy of the competitive course record set at 62.
The Golden Eagles finished the day 12-under par with assistance from Will Burnham and Benjamin Fernandez. The pair delivered 2-over 74, a piece in round one, followed by an improved 1-over 73 to keep Southern Miss in a tie for second place. Walker Wise came up big in round one posting a 1-over 73 with an eagle on hole two, a par four measuring 421 yards. The red-shirt junior finished the back-18 with 3-over 75 to end the day.
Red-shirt freshman, Braden Duvall made his collegiate debut with a consistent 6-over 78 over the span of both rounds collecting 17 pars and five birdies to round out the day. Southern Miss is ranked first in the event on par threes shooting an average of 3.05 while being in a tie for second in total birdies with a collective 45.
